Moby Dick
I never saw the appeal in Moby Dick back when it was the 'in' thing to read about eight years ago, so when I saw it come up on the Classic Serial schedule I didn't think much of it. But then I heard a trail which was unexpectedly compelling, so I tuned in ... and it turned out to have been adapted and directed by the same two people who did Worst Journey two years ago. Neat! I thought. They're bound to get some good drama out of what I'd gathered was a bloated and unstructured book.
Um ... well, you can skip the rest of this entry and judge for yourself if you wish ...
From the blurb: It has very little narrative, no character development to speak of, and there's no dramatic conflict for over five hundred pages. Wa-hey, sounds like potentially riveting radio drama to me! Unfortunately the lack of character development and conflict meant, for me, that even when the whale arrives it failed to 'get its hooks into' me ... though I wonder quite how much is 'lack of character development' and how much 'actors talking really slowly and evidently paying great attention to their accents.' Which is something of a pity, as both Titus and Silas are back for this adventure, though I was unable to pick them out (despite having identified the actors by voice in a few other things since Worst Journey).
That said, I'll listen to Episode 2; it would be unfair to drop it halfway through and anyway I didn't get hooked on Worst Journey till the second time I listened to Part 2. 's just interesting, is all ...
