I recently read Sara Wheeler's description of her travels in Antarctica; on looking at the publication date I realised afterwards that it must have taken place years earlier, but her account of the application process, medical requirements and eventual arrival at the American base was instantly recognisable from your version, albeit with added 'Woo'. Things evidently haven't changed very much!
