A Few More Monstrous Sketches

I was all full of noble intentions along the lines of 'early to bed, early to rise,' but after an hour gently napping I woke refreshed and ready to get on with my day. ARGH. Anyway, at least I can make a post out of it.

Cpl. 'Threeparts' Scallott - Just a very very rough thumbnail. Gotta love those really soft pencils. I think I will never be able to picture a doubly-peg-legged man as anyone but The Evil Pirate Captain Mel from Animaniacs. It's thanks to 'H.M.S. Yakko' that whenever I hear any of the Gilbert & Sullivan tunes used in this episode, the default words in my head are these crazy parodies, which include such lines as 'I am the very model of a cartoon individual/My animation's comical, unusual and whimsical...' WHY are no cartoons made like this these days? Where have all the good writers gone? They were so clever, and well-paced, and funny. It's all sitcoms now. ('I remember when this was all fields...' yeesh, I really am 82.) Are these things on DVD yet? Anyway, if you want to read some transcripts, you can find them here, about three-quarters of the way down.
A more finished one - done with the same pencil as the one above.
A Grey-Faced Soldier - More to capture the pose than as any sort of design thing. Jacket buttoned up tight despite the heat and face grey, apparently he's worse to see than an amputee.
Another Tonker - Like it says. How's this one? Indistinguishable from the others?
Thalacephalos - Blouse's 'Noble Steed' – I know 'cephalos' means 'head' but what does 'thala' mean? I bet it's something naughty. I asked my friend who knows Classical Greek but she didn't know. Tann? Also – this is the limit of my knowledge of horse anatomy. Makani made a turorial once, I should dig it up...
A Use for Onions - Polly has an encounter with 'Roundheels' Molly.
The maid drew closer. ... Polly raised the onions as a kind of barrier.
'I'm sure there's things you'd like to learn,' the maid purred.
'I'm sure there's something you wouldn't!' said Polly, and turned and ran.
(pg 78)
Dashing - Blouse 'brushes up' on his swordsmanship.
Polly was no expert in these matters, but she thought she recognized the stylish, flamboyant pose as the one beginners tend to use just before they're stabbed through the heart by a more experienced fighter. (pg 75) Didn't have room for all of the sword, unfortunately.

I am so going to implement some of the things [livejournal.com profile] disneyboy recommended but his notes spent most of the weekend at the bottom of my roommate's car, so I didn't get to use them much. It will be done, though!

A Use for Onions is absolutely fantastic! Thanks so much for posting your art; seeing it is a great way to start off a day.

What a fascinating and throrough explanation! Thank you!

The language, setting, and political situation in the book has always led me to an impression that Borogravia is like a sort of Central or Eastern European country, but the clear and obvious red jackets have always put me in mind of British uniforms, which may or may not have been the intended effect. I've wanted to bring in a bit of that Prussian/Austro-Hungarian excess of braid and plumes and shiny things, but that would have to be for the High Council (or whatever they're called) and not the common foot soldier, of course. I'm trying not to play the 'it's fictional' card too much as an excuse for laziness, but it is an excuse for less than 100% historical accuracy.

As for the crutch, you're probably right. I tried making it look a little more rustic but the rouighness of the drawing eclispes the rouighness of the crutch. It's just so hard to pose the arm with that old-fashioned style ... [swoons with effort]

Wow - between you and your friends, you guys are like the "Mission:Impossible" team - you can find out anything, huh?! (note to self: try caricature of Tealin as Kim Possible talking to Tannhaeuser((Wade)) on transponder: "Quick - I need to know the translation of Thalacephanlos! Lives hang in the balance!")
Hey, I'm just figuring out that Beucephalos (Baron Munchausen's horse) probably means "beautiful head", huh? Contorted Pasta - good for your brain!
(note to self - don't know what TN looks like - may have to rethink cartoon!)

!

Oh...um...you...yeah. Yeah, I knew that. Of course. Everybody knows about ol' Boukephalas-slash-Boukephalos! I was just testing you - spelling it wrong on PURPOSE, of course, to see if you'd notice! I'm going to shut up now!

[identity profile] amazon-syren.livejournal.com 2006-02-25 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Or possibly "Head-Ache". ;-)

I think she got the disgusted look on Thalasephalos' head just right. :-) (Or as close to right as you can get when she doesn't have something to snigger at).

I think the 'Onions' one is my favourite.

The Pedantic Fencer in me is wailing 'But that's not a proper 'en garde' position!', but I'm doing my best to stifle it.

This the horse tutorial you're thinking of?

To the Pedantic Fencer:
That's kind of the point, isn't it?

THANK YOU for the link! THANK YOU! Who knows how long it would have taken me to find that...

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The Pedantic Fencer: Yes, I suppose so.

You're welcome.

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed, what a lovely surprise! So impressive as always - I really don't understand how you pull any of it off and still manage your enormous workload. (You should figure out a way to parse your assignments out to your grateful fans - those who can draw, anyway - and have them sent back, like the shoemaker's elves, in payment for all of the enjoyment you give us! I sure could use some elves right now, I'll tell you...)I don't have the luxury of time to comment on them in depth today, but really quick first impressions - loved the new Tonker (all of your drawings of her are really superior), thought the fencing posture was terrific (but what do I know about fencing?), really liked both drawings of the double peglegged guy (I LOVE it when you go crazy with those soft pencils! The drawings are so much fun to look at because you clearly enjoyed making them - so energetic and fresh) - great face! I'm sure the crutch is in the book, but it would be entertaining to animate this guy trying to stagger around on just his pegs (how would he keep his balance?); the attitude of the maid in the "onions" drawing was perfect - although (brace yourself for a small comment) it seemed like the maid was drawn in a somewhat more realistic style, whereas Polly was very much in your classic signature stylization (long, narrow face, emphasized nose,"disney-esque" eyes, etc.) I thought both characters were drawn really well, particularly the maid, but I wonder if you should either bring the maid more into your style or draw Polly (just this once) slighty less stylized...Of course, I may feel differently if I look at it again after I've had a few more hours of sleep...Oh, and I liked the "soft-drawn" horse (horses are HARD - at least for me! I could dig out some notes Russ Edmonds made on horse animation for Home on the Range if you remind me ((woops! typed "hose animation" before I caught myself - slightly different!)) )...and...and there was more, but, I'm seriously about to pass out. More later when my deadline has passed (or when they wheel me off to the infirmiry - whichever happens first) - once again, I am inspired by your artistic passion and work ethic and I bask in your coolness. Except I'm worried about being responsible for ruining your beautiful drawings if you're crazy enough to actually implement my hasty notes - I guess I'll just have to trust you know which ideas are goofy enough to ignore, right? I won't be offended if you don't change anything! Seriously!

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-02-20 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I looked at the "onions" again and I'm probably reacting more to the canted angle of the maid's head, which makes her face and nose look really different, proportion-wise(but the angle is perfect! no changee!), and her fuller lips (entirely appropriate - probably wearing lipstick) - and I think Polly might be a little more cleaned-up, with crisper lines - look, don't listen to me; my judgement is unreliable even when I'm not bombed out of my skull.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
YOU SPEAK TRUTH!

See, this is why I need you around, because I actually thought that while drawing – that Molly was way more realistic than Polly – but then I thought 'nah, I'll just keep going, no one'll notice.' How did I get to the point where I fell back on the old 'no one will notice'!? Now I know someone'll notice, so I must watch myself more carefully.

I think what happened was it was a difficult angle to draw, so I started getting all tense and fell back on life drawing experience. It'll be easy enough to slap another piece of paper overtop the old drawing and push her a bit, and just drop her in over the old one in Photoshop. OH THE DECADENCE OF COMPUTERS!

OH THE DECADENCE OF COMPUTERS!

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm glad it wasn't just the sleep deprivation talking (or maybe I'm really smart when I'm tired) - if I would have had more positive feedback experiences like this I might have kept teaching! It's still a lovely drawing - that is the great thing about digital drawing: you can save your every attempt, and steal exactly what you like from it and fix the rest - ad infinitum! Which is, unfortunately, one of the big reasons why, right now, I'm working at a fraction of the speed of paper :) - the temptation of endless re-do's is too tempting for my tiny brain - it's going to make me miss my deadline! Maybe I just need a lobotomy to solve all my problems...

[identity profile] jesidres.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I would try for some constructive criticism, to make me look less like a fangirl over anything you draw, but disneyboy has beaten me to it. With a large blunt stick. So I'll squeal and 'oooOoooOooooooh'.

Instead I'll say that you've made me extremely jealous (moreso than normal) since I can't draw for a while due to stitches in my hand. (Freak Clay accident).

I guess I'll mention that tonker keeps coming off for me like an angry young black man, though simply because I know someone who looks exactly like your sketch (but he's not angry, rather emo in fact).

Dashing Doctor Doppler

[identity profile] ianfinerty.livejournal.com 2006-02-21 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Although there isn't much more i can say along the lines of ooooh ahhh as it has already been said i find it funny that i always saw Blouse as a bit like Niles from Frasier and looking through your earlier pictures of him you said that you saw him as a kind of human Doctor Doppler from Treasure Planet, who was voiced by David Hyde-Pierce (Niles).
Annnyway after seeing this picture of Blouse i was reminded of one scene from Frasier when the timid Niles enter a battle to the death with his wife's German fencing instructor.

Thanks fo rthe Discworld art!

You really peg the personalities of Monstrous Regiment very, very well.

I like the androgynous look- it shows just how useful socks can be.

Okay, seriously, I think I want "A Use for Onions" framed. I laugh every time I look at it. Priceless!

[identity profile] veetvoojagig.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, pretties! Damn, you're talented. *Grins* I really like the onions one.

[identity profile] veetvoojagig.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and on an offhanded note... why do fan artists never draw Lobsang? I've been desperately trawling the internet and cannot find even one picture of him.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I did draw him (once upon a time) but I'm not sure if I ever scanned him and I'm pretty sure he didn't make it on my site. I'll have to dig it up when I get home tonight...

[identity profile] veetvoojagig.livejournal.com 2006-02-23 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love you forever. *Grins*

[identity profile] karwei.livejournal.com 2006-02-24 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
You don't know how happy these pictures make me.

"I YAMM THEE EEVIL PIRATE, CAPTAIN MEL, AND A REALLY EVIL PIRATE, TOO!"

OOh... yes! The Nostalgia that is Animaniacs! How I miss it so! :\ Never has there been a greater parody on Pirates of Penzance than that!

[identity profile] hyel.livejournal.com 2006-02-25 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
I love the grey-faced soldier, and the Tonker (these last two drawings have been so appropriate for the character) and eee onions. Ahh. Thank you for drawing all this.

I think this Blouse looks like Steve Coogan. Not that I'm complaining. I've always had trouble imagining him; mostly in my head he looks like Gussie Fink-Nottle from the Jeeves and Wooster TV-series. Only smaller, tired and er, not lisping. Love the background on that one, even if it's just lightly sketched.

[identity profile] ari-enchanted.livejournal.com 2006-02-25 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
So is you're mood a reference to the Borogravian national anthem?

[identity profile] amazon-syren.livejournal.com 2006-02-25 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Tonker could do with a bit more bubbling anger, however otherwise she's quite good. :-)

"Onions"... Niiiiiiice. :-)

"Grey Faced Soldier": Wow. That looks painful. Good job. :-)
infiniteviking: A bird with wings raised in excitement. (Default)

*snickers at Scallott's hat -- some things are inherently humorous*

The Grey Soldier is suitably creepy -- hands wrapped around himself as though nothing can keep the cold out now. A chilling picture.

I love Thalacephalos's general air of seediness. Allow me to suggest an alternate explanation for the name. [livejournal.com profile] tannhaeuser said that "thala" is connected with "'a body cavity' ... a word for the holes in sponges, for nostrils and recesses in the cranial bones". Perhaps it's a reference to the horse's hollow-eyed, gaunt appearance.

Aaaaah! 'A Use for Onions' is fantastic! Polly's pose is absolutely priceless.

Blouse looks so awkward, it's perfect... his raised hand is particularly good. Why's he fencing with his left hand?

Gorgeous work as always!

This is way way too old, but I feel like I need to comment...
I searched around for the translation when I re-read the book, and apparently, in an interview with someone, Terry Pratchett said that he meant it to mean "Dick-head."
So there ya' go. Straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak. =)
