Happy Draw

Yesterday and this morning I was thoroughly fed up with the stupid monkeys who inhabit this planet. I'd finished my last sequence on Friday so when I came in I didn't have anything to do besides wait for revisions, so I passed some time by watching another Doctor Who episode* and for the rest of the day was full of glee. In tribute I drew this beeeeautiful depiction of the Doctor's magical effect on my day.
[EDIT: Because I can't leave things well enough alone, I've niggled with this ... if you saw it in the first 24 hours it was posted, refresh! It looks sooooo much better now.]

A barely passable attempt at the ninth Doctor ... couldn't make him look as kooky as he can, though.

I've had 'The Ballad of Billy McCaw' stuck in my head all weekend and so tried to get it out by listening to Cats again. Didn't work (it's still stuck) but I played around with some Growltiger stuff.

Growltiger woos the Lady Griddlebone (who, it appears, is trouble in her own right) ... thank you, Life Drawing. What shall I do through the month of August when neither work nor school is holding it? Nothing will be drawn at all!

My fantabulous sister is rubbing off on me. A little. Need more.

Look at my effective time management! I'm going to be a zombie tomorrow! Hooray!

*I'm limiting my intake so they last longer. I'm still on Doctor #9. Don't rush me! It's hard enough that the CBC taunted me by playing 'Christmas Invasion' this Christmas but not the rest of the series concurrently with the BBC.

Growliger's pose is awesome! ( the one with the sword) :)

Hehe, I drew it to fit the space on that page of the sketchbook. ;)

ahhh so awesome *_*. you and your sister are inspiration wells.

As are you! Good to see you made it back from L.V. in one piece. :D

[identity profile] tulanoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow! Thanks makani! You just so totally made my day :D

Thank you, thank you Tealin, for becoming addicted to Doctor Who. One of my favourite artists doing pretty much all of my fandoms now. ^.^ *has a Christopher Ecclesgrin on her face*

Which episode are you up to? Also, that first picture captured him... pretty much completely.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooooh so addicted. :D The episode in question was 'Father's Day' (where, coincidentally, he's alo fed up with the stupid monkeys who inhabit this planet, but has the grace to call them apes) ... The next is a two-parter which is Rawrsie's favourite so I think I'll have to save it for a special occasion, or emergency cheerfulness measures.

Thank you so much for saying it captured him ... I'd been working on trying to get a graphic, simplified caricature all day and only managed that one during Naked People Time.

You don't have to tell me the order of Doctor Who episodes. I know them all off by heart! :) Oh, yes, of the old series, Empty Child and Doctor Dances are worth a million of any of the others. You'll love them. I expect to see drawings. :D

Also, hi. I don't think I've introduced myself before...?
I'm Abs, an anonymous lurker on LJ, and you're really only one of about 4 LJ's I read regularly, and the 2nd I've commented on, so whee!

I love your art, I love your taste in literature, and I especially love that you've recently become a Doctor Who fan. Hooray for Pratchett, Potter and Who!

I like how you made Griddlebone look. She's all pretty and demure. Man, I need to dig out my copy of Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and draw some...

[identity profile] lisafeld.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I love the guy with the scarf! And I always find your anthropomorphic animals fantastic.

[identity profile] noodledaddy.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Great to see you drawing again, these are just fantasic!

[identity profile] shazzamitsneill.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I love these drawings. They make me feel nice.

[identity profile] pyri-prongs.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Hehhee, the first picture is practically how he acts all the time, making people happy, but usually there's some monster after him stepping on the figurative flowers :P Eccleston is awesome and your drawing of him is plenty kooky ^_^ I prefer him to David Tennant, even if they both have equally bizarre facial bone structure.

Awww, I love how Griddlebone's all tiny and dainty and Growltiger's all hunched up and looming but trying to be gentle and charming. Contrast roxors.

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY YOU DREW NINE!

How far have you got through the series? There's a wonderful line in The Empty Child.
"My nose has special powers."
"Do your ears have special powers too?"

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-01 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
NO THAT'S THE NEXT ONE AAAAH! ;) I hear The Empty Child and its companion episode are very good. That's why I'm saving it for something special. Like forty-five minutes I didn't know I had in the middle of the day. Or when I need it. Or if yet another war starts somewhere. So... Thursday, I'm guessing.

His ears do glow, when he's backlit. That's a special power. Emergency illumination.

All acting prowess aside, I wonder if David Tennant got special consideration for Doctor #10 on account of his name ... it's the most obvious mnemonic ever.

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
Emergency illumination= brilliant.
An obvoius mnemonic... which I completely missed.

I, for no reason at all, have a mental list of 'Films never to let Rose Tyler watch'. 'Let Him Have It' is top of the list.

(Anonymous) 2006-08-02 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I can just see her reaction to that... something along the lines of
"O.O Doctor?!?! Your hair!!11!! OMG."

Ah, Rose.

*snort*

Though I was actually referring to the fact that he gets hanged at the end.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless it would be something more like 'Doctor? This bloke ... he looks a bit like you. Weird.'

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Dunno, it'd freak me out a bit. Mind you, she's been chased by evil dustbins, so...

hello!

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Love all this stuff - your excellent Dr. ? drawings almost make me wish I had TV again to see what all the fuss is about (thanks for the "Guards" links - I caught most of them and enjoyed the cheesy "space mission" series as well!). Have you seen the model sheets that Amblimation did when they were developing "Cats" oh so long ago? Anyway your Growltiger and Griddlebone are truly delightful! Also liked the man in the scarf! It does seem like you're moving into the crisp, graphic, highly stylized world that Tula generally inhabits!
I also admire your ability to remain productive creative, humorous, and hopeful (occaisional lapses are allowed) in the face of overwhelming tragedy, despair and frightening, infuriating stupidity and/or evil that seems to rule the day.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, wow! Great to see you around again! I hope everything's OK...? I mean with you of course, we all know about the lovely geopolitical situation and general tetchiness of the world at large. (I avoid despair by drugging myself with fiction! Hooray!) Amblimaton was doing Cats?! Why did they stop? Is it totally dead? Why haven't I ever heard about this? I'd love to see some of their stuff! I suppose the guy in the scarf is more crisp and/or stylized ... it's kind of more of a return to the style of the character designer I worked under for three years from whom I learned an awful lot. My own designs have been getting rather stale of late (when I bother to do them at all) so it's about time something happened to them.

I suspect this is rather a 'lapse' out of hopelessness and into creativity and humour, if relative duration of moods is considered. But I'm enjoying it while it lasts. Is this a 'lapse' back into the internet for you or are you back back?

(ulp!)

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
You ask too many pregnant questions for a hasty reply (which is all I have time for right now)! And I don't know the answers to some of them yet (like maybe the last one). But stay tuned...more will follow eventually!
I am OK - though things were looking a bit dicey for a while (again, I'll provide more details later - really!)
I will also see if I can dig up some of that Cats stuff...

YAY! Disneyboy is back, even if for but a moment. Looking forward to future postings, however infrequent.

Re: hello!

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks for noticing. I think nearly everyone else has, understandably, given up and moved on!

I have to notice, we have your birthday present and need to know to bring it to LALA LAnd or if we can reasonably wait until your traditional b-day party at you-know-where.

Re: hello!

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Already? Goodness, whatever you prefer, seeing as you got the present! I just wish I could visit with you guys before October! Well, we'll see what happens...

[identity profile] wizardelfgirl.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
They were going to make an animation of CATS???? OMG!!!!!!! I would have died of glee, why did they cancel it?

And I totally agree on the the stupidity that rules right now, it's just... I tend to lose faith in the world, really.

Re: hello!

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
As for "Cats", I'm not sure (this was, what, 10 or 12 years ago?) I think it's possible that they realized there wasn't enough of a through story (a main character, a conflict, resolution, etc.) connecting all the poems to make a coherent film, and that it was too difficult to come up with one and superimpose it on the original material. Or it may have simply been a victim of being in development when Spielberg dissolved Amblimation, after co-founding Dreamworks. Who knows? Anyway, I'll try to track down those model sheets - I remember them as being pretty cool.

[identity profile] blooappall.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 09:25 am (UTC)(link)
You haven't seen the new series with Ten?

And I thought I had it bad.

They've just finished here in England, and I've had to resort to watching the REALLY old episodes, back with William Hartnell.

You poor thing!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only have I not seen them, I've had to endure all the promos on Radio 4! Aagh! Unfortunately, all the back seasons at the library (well, the ones they have, anyway) have waiting lists a mile long, but now that I've got that PIN stuff sorted out I can finally put myself on them. I wonder if I can make this season last until then...

[identity profile] zeero302.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They are...AWSOME! I am in admiration of your great talent to capture animal characters! It's the fur that gives me trouble. :P

[identity profile] lady-twatterby.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 02:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahahahahahahahahaha!

That Doctor is really great! :D Of course something like that makes your day! Yay for the Doctor!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Is ... that ... Vetinari? \: '

[identity profile] lady-twatterby.livejournal.com 2006-08-04 12:13 pm (UTC)(link)
As a matter of fact, it is! :D

[identity profile] trashcanbaby.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
No more skool life drawing sessions? :(

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Not for August ... check with the drawing wallas though, for sure.

(Anonymous) 2006-08-02 06:58 pm (UTC)(link)
drawing wallas?!?

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-08-02 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh ... the people in charge of the whole thing. You know, Them.

[identity profile] wizardelfgirl.livejournal.com 2006-08-03 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I love your Growltiger, and I love more to know I'm not the only one with music from a play stuck in her head, I've had "Point of no Return" from Phantom... stuck in there for like a week.
Oh, and your Doctor is like, LOL!!!!!

[identity profile] brendanm720.livejournal.com 2006-08-05 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the Dr. Who art.

May I make a LJ icon out of the "Bust" of Nine?
