Tally Ho

I have just rediscovered how much I love Blackadder Goes Forth. It's wonderfully silly but really quite dark, with occasional moments of surprising poignancy that prove how well the actors have filled their otherwise comic roles.* Now, in the vein of Scary Mary, comes a 'trailer' for the epic, tragic tale of Capt. E. Blackadder & Co.

Needless to say, it's funnier if you're familiar with the series, and most funny if you've watched it recently enough to remember the context for most of the scenes they used. But it's better than all of the trailers I saw in front of Children of Men which were a real crop of duds...

*Or how well it's written. Or both. Or neither, and I'm finding something where there isn't anything really. Suits me fine, whatever.

And here I was thinking I'm the only American who appreciated, or had even heard of, the Blackadder series. Besides my parents (who introduced me to it) and my sister. To quote Hugh Laurie, "Bravo!"

Surely you mean "BRAVO!!" :D

Same to you. Spread the word! This is how comedy should be done!

[identity profile] phantom-drummer.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, of course. "BRAVO!!!"

A bunch of friends and I actually hosted a Blackadder II marathon Saturday night. Now I need to watch some of the later episodes again! Well done, random vidder!

SCARY MARY!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I have not seen Blackadder's Christmas Carol! O that such a thing exists! It actually amuses me somewhat as I have just recently used Blackadder as an indictment against the recent radio production of A Christmas Carol on BBC7, where Scrooge's character was not played in such a way as to bring out his intrinsic comic side – my point is that Scrooge, like Blackadder, is a miserable, bitter person, but one who takes great pleasure in expressing this bitter misery in as clever and barbed a way as possible. This is written into Scrooge's character, and ignoring it does a disservice to the character and to the story.

I don't know what the music is, but it sounds familiar ... do you know what it is?

Woah! That was rather chilling I thought! (but the film version could be called Snakes in a Trench *is shot*) There's no Flashheart in the trailer? :( I am sad!

Ahem - anyway yes, Blackadder Goes Fourth is awesome and funny :D The very end of the series is very touching.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I am glad at the lack of Flashheart ... his only redeeming quality is that he is an amusing parody of the sort of character Captain Jack is in Dr Who (there are TOO MANY CAPTAIN JACKs -- there should be a moratorium on naming characters Captain Jack) which puts him slightly above them in my mind. Arr, irritating oversexed cocky Americans.

The end of the series. YES. Oh my gosh. It's amazing. It's the most incredible thing, you spend three hours laughing at these people and then when it comes right down to it you discover you actually care about them, even the annoying twat ... how many shows can do that? I love that, taking a comedy seriously, but not so seriously that it's not funny. They're geniuses.

[identity profile] pyri-prongs.livejournal.com 2007-01-25 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm biased for Flashheart because he's Rick Mayall, and he would sort of ruin the faux-seriousness of that trailer just a bit :D *woof woof!*

It is very sobering, and very touching seeing them all (even cowerdly Blackadder) step up in the name of duty and jump over that front line. Geeeeeniuses :)

♥ ♥ ♥

Lulz. XD

The ONLY thing I didn't like was the font at the end, which made it look like it said "BLACKADDER GOES FOR TH" and I wondered for a second if they'd just stopped early.

Aaah, Blackadder. I still haven't seen the fourth season, nor the carol or the cavalier episodes. Watched the movie though ^^
Baldrick will be my hero for ever and ever XD

Do you want a turnip of your very own?

[identity profile] wicked-warrior.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a small one at the countryside, for holydays ;)

*titter*

Was that guy, who said something about folding pajamas, the same guy who played John Clay in Granada's 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Red-Headed League'?

I'm SURE it is. What is the name of his character in Blackadder?

Oh, and Scary Mary is scary. These go to show just how much the music matters.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup, he's Tim McInnery (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0570570/) ... and he was also a major influence on my design for William deWorde. In this series of Blackadder he's Capt. Darling, he also plays a character named Darling in the Cavalier Blackadder, and before that his characters are named Percy.

[identity profile] floramir.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay! I get points!

And his various identities sound confusing; ever since I started watching Holmes obsessively, I'm seeing people from that show EVERYWHERE.

Oo, good eye.

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Blackadder is full of win. Full right to the brim.

[identity profile] lady-nimua.livejournal.com 2007-01-24 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
It made me laugh, but then it made me sad because I thought about the last episode :(

I love that series.

I adore Blackadder. Never seen Blackadder Goes Forth, tho... should see if my library has it; they had one of the earlier seasons.
I believe Blackadder's Christmas Carol is on Youtube, by the by. That is a fantastic piece to be sure.

What a perfect series. I, too, had forgotten the hilarity that resulted from a battlefield's worth of tin soldiers being scraped into a waste receptacle...
