When is a parcel not a parcel?

I went to the post office today to send off a small package. It was definitely a rectangular prism, not an overstuffed envelope. It was made of cardboard and was wrapped in brown paper with packing tape. This is a parcel, right?

I looked at the list of shipping rates to various destinations, and was shocked to find that shipping a parcel to the States started at $10. I could very clearly remember shipping something not long ago that was less than half that – had there been some sort of under-the-radar postage hike lately? With great trepidation I approached the counter - having spent almost fifteen minutes in line, it was too late to flee - and proffered my parcel for postage.

It came to $5.10.

So what makes a parcel a parcel? Certain dimensions? A weight threshold? Saying "I'd like to ship this parcel" rather than "mail this, er ... letter"?

I've decided this journal is pathetically lacking in visual content. So ... random Photobucket image!

Teehee!

Of course, half the people who look at this journal (so far) have already seen this ... That means YOU, Ubiquitouspitt!

Whee! I'm thinking of making it into an icon.

I HOPE... that super expensive parcel wasn't on my behalf... *chews nails in a

(eee!) like fashion*

Teehee, goggles!

As for the parcel... hum hum ...

But $5.10 isn't expensive - at least not compared to crazy exhorbitant $10!

$5! Well, that's not as bad. Is it going to be flown over by swallow? If so, will it be a European swallow or an African swallow laden with coconuts..?
