Okay, so I was planning to watch the next episode on that library DVD tonight, but it turned out I had watched them all last night (how did that happen?) so I went poking around in the special features and there were comedy sketches! I like comedy sketches, what the heck, I'll give it a shot. And they were funny. Hysterically funny, on some counts. BUT THEN ...


I think I managed to watch the whole sketch without blinking. Or possibly breathing.

After a little bit of internet scrounging, on account of there being no credits for the sketches (?!) I discovered this unnerving apparition is none other than MARK GATISS. I KNOW THAT NAME! HE'S FROM FROM RADIO 4! I listened to his show Nebulous! And heard him on other shows!! And he wrote The Unquiet Dead! But I swear – I swear – I have never seen Mark Gatiss before in my entire life! When I drew Moist the first time it was like 'WHOA, he just popped out of my pencil fully formed!' and now I know I was somehow psychically channeling MARK GATISS! I was practically tracing his face! MY HEAD IS A WORMHOLE, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!

How extremely uncanny. The resemblence is startling.

Is that drawing like an ancestor photo? In our house we've got a load of photos of long-dead relatives. They're on the wall in the hall. Some of the relatives are still alive or died recently, but most of them are from ages ago. One fellow has the most impressive beard I've ever seen.

No, it's a charcoal drawing (pretty amazing, huh?) drawn by an ancestor of mine ... we don't know who it's of. (I assume it's someone who didn't pay for the portrait, ha ha ha. Or perhaps a Timelord who got called off to other things before he could pay! Mwaaah!)

Believe it or not, the only reference to Hans Costenoble I've been able to find on the web is a reference to a book in which some illustrations are said to be "after Hans Costenoble." The book was published by a relative of Hans', Hermann Costenoble, in Jena, Germany in 1892.

I say "believe it or not" because it is obvious that Has was an artist of no small amount of skill. We have 3 other charcoals by him, each about 12x19, and I know of a fourth that exists.

Something like this happened to me, too. I drew a picture of a character of my own, about the umpteenth attempt at capturing that character on paper. It wasn't really based on anyone, and it turned out to be exactly the way I pictured that character (I was pretty impressed, actually--my drawings don't normally turn out that well).

Many months later, I saw a picture of Kate Beckinsale taken from the movie Underworld and just about died. She looked just like my character.
