Draurings!

Gag sketches will be forthcoming, but before I can do them, I had to work out updated designs. It was surprisingly easy to picture Harry & Co. at 16/17.
Harry - He is Harry.
Malfoy - Design probably inspired by one of the characters in a classmate's final film.
Ron - Meh ... he's okay.
Hermione - Also okay. Good enough.
Slughorn - Likely stolen from a project I was working on with a friend which had a character that looked very similar. Sluggy's fatter, though ... ? Their descriptions are just so similar.

The first of ... well, a few, anyway.
GAG SKETCH #1
Tell me I wasn't the only one thinking this...
(It will probably get coloured when I go home and have my lovely tablet on my lovely computer with the monitor that does colours right)

I found your website through another lj and I just wanted to say, I think your drawings are fantastic. I'm sure you hear that all the time but a person can never receive enough praise. :)

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
If they're the type to let it go to the head, a person can recieve too much praise. But thanks. : )

Here via [livejournal.com profile] synaesthete7's shout. Slughorn is just how I imagined, and I think you capture the essence of both Ron and Hermione's characters in Book 6 - awesome!

[identity profile] contorted-smile.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
oh lordy, these are effin wonderful! i like hermione the best..and well, actually i like em all-they're all so grown up (which numerous people have pointed out) but none the less, they look lovely. :D

ahhh..the lovely realm of drawing

Awesome drawings!

At first, the only ones I liked were Ron, Hermione, and Slughorn, but then I realized that there's a rather large gap between your updating of Harry--I checked; you have one picture of him in Goblet and none in Phoenix. So it's understandable when I think there's a big difference between 16-year-old Harry and your most recent drawings of him before Book 6 (which would be the Azkaban Project). Great job on all of them!

Oh, btw, I'm getting a HTTP 404 Not Found error when I try to get to the By-Products of the Azkaban Project.

Good Lord, those are fantastic!

[identity profile] tony-cliff.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Jeez, I hate to stick out like a sore thumb, but here:

Malfoy feels a bit too jock-ish for me. I think it's the proper up-an-down head. He doesn't quite feel slimy enough. Might just be the front-on angle, though.

What about exaggerating Slughorn's eyes? Making them smaller and pushing them more towards his nose? Right now he feels a bit too thoughtful and a tad too sincere.

Ha ha ha, sorry, you may not have wanted crits. I know they're just sketches. Oh well, just my 2p. It's weird seeing the others older, but hey, they look right! Bueno!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, criticism, so long as it is relevant and informed, is always welcome. I think what may be making Malfoy look jockish is his relatively thick neck. I tried a thin neck and it made him look rather too young and feminine, so I bulked it up a bit and it looked a little better, to my eyes. I tried to refrain from making him too bulky – he's still got fairly lanky shoulders (though they have broadened out). I'm just going through the book of tricks to age people up and seeing what works... Maybe in a different pose, a thinner neck will look better.

I was actually just thinking this morning when I scanned him that Slughorn ought to have more closely-set eyes. I think what I need to do is scrap the image of that other character in my head before I try again, because he was thoughtful and sincere. Dunno about smaller ... I'll have to see when I draw him bigger, as if I shrink his eyes down now they will just be little black smudges.

Thankee muchly!

I love Sluggy. No, he dosn't need any more weight!

I work at a large men's store and Sluggy is my ex mamager.

He's perfect. A perfect 3x. Anything bigger on a small frame you start to see movement and severe health problems. (Hair loss, disentegrating skin, trouble breathing...)

I know there are potions, but Sluggy loves his sweets and although he's chubby, he dosn't have trouble getting about.

Great pic! He's my fave right now!

[identity profile] loonylexie.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Your Slughorn is spot-on! I love the others as well!

EEE inspiration!! :DD man, they're great. your ron rocks the house x).

amazing images Tealin ill once again praise you on your character design skills. the sharp flowing lines make it look like film cell art, wonderful.

I was looking forawrd to seeing you draw the kids "all grown up" and youve pulled it off wonderfully! the older harry looks like your take on James, which of course is a good thing "you look just like your father"

youve also drawn slughorn just as i pictured whilst reading book 6

[identity profile] siofra86.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been a fan for several years, and I just wanted to say that your work is awesome, and these sketches are no different. Fan-frickin'-tastic, as usual.

Harry is my favorite, though Slughorn is pretty darn good, too. Malfoy actually looks about right to me, even with the wide shoulders and thick neck. *shrug*

Nicely done!

It's so hard for me to picture them older.... I mean, for me they still seemed younger in Goblet. It was the fifth one that made me realise "blimey, they're actually growing up" and, my oh my, it's true.
Anyway, great job with them!

I love your drawings, especially Hermione and Slughorn but all of them are the best in the internet...Just out of curiosity, are you going to draw some Lupin?

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, considering that I've only got about one total page of new Lupin material (not counting expository dialogue, as that is not a 'character moment') I'd say HBP Lupin drawings are unlikely to occur. I'm sure there will be more Lupin at some point though. I just can't keep my pencil off 'im. ;)

[looks at the gag sketch #1]

[bursts out laughing]

That is AWESOME. I must admit I was not thinking of that, but that is perfect. Seriously. I clicked the link like 5 times while I was talking to my friend, pressing the "Back" button each time and thinking that was the last time I was going to look at it. It's just awesome. Great work again!

Also, I've been wondering; do Mary GrandPre and/or the illustrator for the UK Editions influence your artwork at all? Just curious.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-07-19 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, I think that;s one of the best compliments I've ever had ... I do that to other people's drawings all the time and it's immensely flattering when someone does so with mine!

I was influenced by Mary GrandPre at the beginning of my HP 'career' (I blame her and the lighting of the frontspiece in Azkaban for my mistaken belief that Sirius had dark blonde hair) but I have tried to be a bit more independent ... I haven't been influenced by the British covers at all because frankly, they are blah.

harry looks so much like his father. except his eyes. he has lily's eyes.

fantastic job<3

blah blaha..:D ive poked up again..ta say "thanks tealin" ive now gathered the strength to doodle about the book in this stifling heat. when inspiration strikes you know n_n although i think its only knocked me over the head because im listening to one two step and looking at your overly-handsome-older-harry . muwaha

Pssh, oh yeah, YOUR GAG SKETCH ROCKS.....i do feel extreamly lame using the word "rocks" but..heh..

(found your journal through your site, although I can't remember where I got the link to your site... aheheh)

That gag sketch makes it all better for this distraught Potterhead. Bwahahaha. Although the filename made me think immediately of some sort of Voldy/Sauron joke, what with the Horcruxes being vaguely reminiscent to the Ring...

Anyway, I digress. I love your art, and these pieces are no exception.

Bwahahaha... *goes off chuckling*
