Road Trip II

Friday, July 15 ...

Virgin River Gorge - the most dramatic part of I-15 between SLC and San Diego. I think I was holding the camera straight (look at the roadsign) ... geology is grand, n'est-ce pas? This is all of Arizona I've ever seen.
Poles - A forest of power lines near Mesquite, NV. Carrying power from ... Lake Mead? No, that would be the wrong direction. Or would it? I don't know. They were busy doing something besides looking almost surreal.
Welcome to Las Vegas - Citie of 1,000 Surprises! Some people actually visit this city by choice.
Vegas Taxi - I hate to think what kind of mileage this thing gets.
The Mad Greek - This is a restaurant – a glorified truck stop, really – in the middle-of-nowhere town of Baker. (At least, I think it was Baker.) This place... was so extreme. It was a living parody of excess. I had to take a lot of pictures ... there was no choice. It was too amusing. (Besides, they had signs every mile along the freeway for a couple hours on either side so I figure they'd appreciate the publicity.)
Inside the Mad Greek - I'm sure there were cafeterias just like this in ancient Thebes. I especially like the authentic silk grape vines.
Around the Corner - Got three square feet of unused floor? Put a statue in! Oh, and make it Poseidon, who is so at home in the middle of the desert.
Seal of Approval - I'm so glad they approve of themselves. (...?)
Mad ... Olive? - We're All Mad, Here!
100 Oscars - I'm still trying to figure out this sign. The food was good, though.
Zzyzx Road - The best road name in the USA. Someone was really shooting for the bottom.
109° - The world's largest thermometer. It was across the street from the Mad Greek. I took a picture, because that's what one does. That's what it's there for. 109° is hot.
Volunteer Chair - It was so nice of it to donate its time. Because of an unfortunate string of traffic incidents, we got into San Diego four hours later than we were expecting (but we had the Going Postal audio book, so it wasn't that bad). We met up with our contact at the ComiCon and, after some last-minute musical escapades, managed to catch the end of the awards ceremony. This chair was in that room.

Tomorrow ... will have to be divided in at least three. July 16th was at least three days long, I swear.

Oohh!! Whatever posessed me to skip Comic Con this year!!! >.<

*Deedee KICKS herself!*

LOLOLOLOLOL!!!! And it really DOES look like Greece! There's a restaurant in Mykonos that looks JUST like that place, as well as the touristically cheap souvenir pottery factory in Mycenae!

100 Oscars? I think an oscar is a type of fish... so was it a seafood place?

Hmm, there's a theory ... I thought maybe 100 people named Oscar worked there. Or, given how they like to give themselves awards, that they'd given themselves 100 Oscars. Or maybe it's run by Dibbler. (But the food ingredients were recognizable, so that must not be the case.)

I was at the comic-con. Too much walking. However, I did get Amber Benson's photo and autograph. (Amber Benson played 'Tara' on Buffy the Vampire Slayer)

Ooh, hey, I knew that.

Probably because I have every season on DVD and have watched each episode FAR too many times.

Oops?

I knew I'd seen the Mad Greek somewhere before; the Zzyzx roadsign tipped me off. I used to live out there, right outside of Jean. :)

Zzyzx?!

wow, someone was on something when they named that road lol

The mad greek reminds me of the house in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"...

Yes! Exactly what I was thinking. XD

Zzyzx! Omg, we were driving from Los Angeles to Las Vegas while I was in America the other week and we went past that sign! My brother took a photo of it! And we passed Jean too. My mum took a photo of it becuase her name's Jean and she thought it was amusing.

And I've seen that giant thermometer too! Ah memories.

people actually visit this city by choice

"There's a saying that all roads lead to Ankh-Morpork Las Vegas. And it's wrong. All roads lead away from Ankh-Morpork Las Vegas, but sometimes people just walk along them the wrong way."

TERRY PRATCHETT HAS COMPLETELY CORRUPTED MY MIND!!

Sounds like you had a party though! Were there gyros involved?

[identity profile] bananabasket.livejournal.com 2005-08-07 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
NO WAY YOU'RE LISTENING TO WICKED OMG!!!11111

Ok, so you liiikked it? I wasn't sure if you did...

But you're listening so.... yay!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-08-07 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I listened to it, but it's so hard to understand what they're saying in the ensemble numbers!

What I've seen of Arizona is anthills and the heat advisories on weatherchannel.com - VirusQ, by the way, is pretty darn hot. So blame her.

ROFL!! Vivvaaa Las Vegas! My boss is getting ready to be married there even as I type...

Marc found the Mad Greek incredibly amusing (as did I). Right after San Diego, it's Baker for me!

Zzyzx road. Either a product of Charles Manson or Neil Peart.
