Physiognomy and Subconscious Associations II

Observation of the day:

I've been trying to draw 'Johnny' (Shufti's 'fiancée' from Monstrous Regiment). Today I realised I've been edging him towards looking like a guy at work. Never ask me to draw you, because you never know who you might end up cast as ...

EDIT: I think I may have been misleading: people end up as character designs subconsciously! Subconsciously!!

As long as you don't begin thinking of birthmarks when you see him at work!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Or funny warts, heeheehee.

[identity profile] fryingpanofdoom.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
Now I'll bet you won't be able to not think about warts when you see him next--like not thinking about pink elephants.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I am doomed. (Actually I thought about not thinking about warts when I saw him this morning...)

Of course, someone from last year's 3D crew made it into Dragons 2 as a minor character – I'm not entirely sure that was a conscious decision by the designer there, either, so I'm not the only one who does it.

BTW, shouldn't your icon read 'do not curse the darkness, light an explosive cloud of flour'? ;)

[identity profile] fryingpanofdoom.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
It should, but the *mis*quote is one of my favorites.
I wanted to make an icon with it.
I had a Monstrous Regiment picture lying around.
So I butchered the quote. (It's from Nobby discovering the really good weapons in Men At Arms)

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes yes, I remember the quote (it's one of the best, and great for icon...age? ing?) – just, speaking personally, I have a weak spot for mangling quotes into something pathetically specific. Probably this is why the ridiculously specific definitions of complicated words in the Snicket books tickle my funny bone so much.

In other words, ME ME ME ME MEE!!

Your icon's great as it is.

[identity profile] fryingpanofdoom.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm...I like the flour...there may be a new version of it tomorrow...

" Never ask me to draw you, because you never know who you might end up cast as ..."

Oh GOODIE! I'll start bombarding my next post with my own glorifying narcisism right away! :D

[identity profile] canisdoofus.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
I think I may be too goofy to be drawn! XP (do you challenge that???)

LOL! What he said!

Yeah, are you trying to AVOID requests to be drawn? Are you kidding?? I wanna be a Terry Pratchet* character drawn by Twirlynoodle! Especially if they're really weird! WHO in their right mind WOULDN'T? Where does the line begin?

*or any other cool literary character, fantasy or otherwise!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I based my Arthur Weasley on you. You were one of the people I met either shortly before or shortly after I first read Harry Potter who made it into my mental cast.

Now I can consider myself cool

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Really?? No way! Now I have to look at the drawing again...urk...how far back do I have to go in your journal to find it? Well, I'll find it regardless...

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
Uhhh... look on my page. I think I've only done two, and the better-one-by-far is in the Azkaban Project. He's evolved a bit and of course I had to age him up but I definitely think you were the starting place.

And two and a half hours later...

[identity profile] disneyboy.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I actually found "my" picture (I love it! It's like me...only with more hair! And a chin! I'm so honored) right away (thanks for the tip), but it seemed like as good of an excuse as any (besides avoiding work) to go back through ALL your Potter art again...and some of the Discworld stuff...and the Master and Commander page...unfortunately it would take much MORE than a couple of hours to adequately express my admiration, and enthuse about what I love about each drawing, so maybe you can wait until I can go through these with you in person at some point, because I can talk a lot faster (if not as thoughtfully or precisely) than I type. You are awesome (in case you forgot).

If this is a bandwagon, I'm definitely jumping on it.

Draw me! Draw me! Oooh, I could be Maladict! ;)

*goes off to reread MR*

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Already done Maladict, unfortunately...

The problem is, there are usually more male characters in books I like than female, but it seems most people who want drawings are female, so either I can never use what I draw (consciously or subconsciously) or I end up sort of translating the face into male – as happened with my roommate becoming Carcer. Be careful what you wish for!

Aww, don't let us pressure you. Your work is excellent whatever level of consciousness it represents.

Now I remember your Maladict... she had a pert kind of sauciness that surprised me. I love your expressions -- always complex and characteristic.

as happened with my roommate becoming Carcer

Hee! That must've been interesting.

I had a friend in fashion school that referred to birthmarks, moles, etc., as "'runs' in the fabric" - like they were K-mart or Mervyn's people or something. I thought that was pretty amusing.

[identity profile] bibliokat.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I would be honored to be any character in a Discworld book! Or any other book! (Though, um, preferably a female character.)

I can't wait to see your Monstrous Regiment pic(s)!

[identity profile] hyel.livejournal.com 2006-02-10 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
I am so, so looking forward to these. Can't you post a few at a time, maybe, rather than all at once? So we could get some right nooowwww.

(Anonymous) 2006-02-11 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid I look like a mix of your Aziraphale and Dr Lawn ^^

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-02-11 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
... have I ever met you?
