Oh We Like Sheep

I would like to take a moment to say

I LOVE WOOL.

I have long known it's the best thing for keeping out damp cold, it's incredibly durable, and stain-resistant, fairly wrinkle-resistant as well (yet creasable!) and all-around excellent.

Today I splurged and got some heavyweight wool suiting for the frock coat part of my Halloween costume (which I plan on wearing every winter, not just for one day). It is luxurious. Compared to the odd mystery polyester blend I was working with last year, and to the lining I was trying the pattern on last week, it's an absolute dream to pin the pattern to, cut, pin together, and I expect it'll be magnificent to sew and finish as well.

THANK YOU, SHEEP! Keep up the good work!

Not only is it marvelous to sew, it's also incredibly forgiving. O, the rapture of wool.

Yes! And wool yarn is even doubly wonderful. Handknit socks... *sigh*

I really can't think of anything clever to add here, so instead I'll compliment your incredibly clever title (and I choose to compliment myself on my religious/musical background rather than beat myself for being slow-witted that I got the song reference long before I noticed the clever play on words)!

Ditto ditto. You keep the choristers smiling, Tealin.

This actually comes from when I was playing in the orchestra for the Sing-Along Messiah. I had never really paid terribly close attention to the words of the Messiah (choral music being pretty much unintelligible to me) but the choir always sounded like they were saying 'Oh we like sheep' which I didn't understand but was amusing anyway. It wasn't until playing from the actual score of the piece that I found out it was actually called 'All We Like Sheep' – silly Handel, leaving out that crucial comma. It was then easy to turn the next line, which I heard from the depths of the string section, into 'who've gone astray,' which wasn't much of a stretch given the established Utahn phobia of diction.

A few years later my former roommate's choir sang the Messiah and I told her this story ... She has since found it impossible to keep a straight face during that movement. Mwahahaha.

The sheep say: you're welcome. ♥

OMG this entry is SO terribly Dumbledore. XD

So what is your costume going to be? Or is it a supreeeese?

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-09-20 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not a surpreeese, I just doubt most anyone would have any idea ... I'm being Steerpike in his Assistant-to-Secretary-Barquentine costume from the 2000 BBC production of Gormenghast. (...modifying the coat a little to make it less specifically cool and more all-winter-long awesome and versatile...)

Sorry they're rather blurry and small ... It's practically the only scene in the movie that has lighting enough to be able to see the waiscoat and jacket at all rather than them just showing up as a black blob.

Is it worth the waiting for?
If we live 'til eighty four
All we ever get is ray…on!
Ev'ry day we say our prayer --
Will they change what we wear?
Still we get the same old ray…on!
There is not a skirt, not a scarf can we find,
Can we beg, can we borrow, or cadge,
But there's nothing to stop us from getting a thrill
When we all close our eyes and imag...ine

Wool, glorious wool!
Warm sweaters and mittens!
While we're in the mood --
coats, caps and cardigans!
kilts, pullovers and jackets!
What next is the question?
Rich gentlemen have it, boys --
Clothing blessings!

Wool, glorious wool!
We're anxious to try it.
Three changes a day --
Our favorite, try it!!

Nice...I see we are a fan of Oliver, I take it?

Not really, the song just sprung into my head when I read Twirly's subject line. It is kind of iconic.

You guys have all cracked up.

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2006-09-21 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't use wool much. Generally speaking I prefer fleece.

Scarfs, on the other hand, must be made of wool. And preferably eleven feet long, but that's really just me.

You forgot flame-retardent and renewable resource under your list of wooly attributes :P

As a knitter, I can definitely vouch for the wonders of wool, especially its forgiving properties . . .

I don't know why I just thought of this, but did you know that in the Old Testament there is a passage that strictly forbids the use of fabric made of two different kinds of thread woven together (it mentions wool and linen specifically)? I always wondered if that meant I was going to Hell for wearing cotton/polyester blend.

In other news, I just figured out what I am going to be for Halloween as I was reading your post.

I see Steerpike greatly resembles Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Am I right? :)

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-09-24 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Um ... he is Jonathan Rhys Myers. Seven years ago. Before he was 'hot.'

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2006-09-24 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
That is to say, he's played by Mr R-M. Perhaps Mr R-M is Steerpike, but it would be hard for Steerpike to be him, on account of having been written a few decades before his birth...

[identity profile] fairy-gany.livejournal.com 2006-09-27 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
God yes !
I saw him in "Velvet Goldmine", and ...argh !
What happened to him ? What a pity ! In "Match Point" I didn't recognised him at first !

[identity profile] keimar.livejournal.com 2006-09-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, yes. But luckily I am not a fangirl... my cousin is. But I am not!
