Oh We Like Sheep

I would like to take a moment to say

I LOVE WOOL.

I have long known it's the best thing for keeping out damp cold, it's incredibly durable, and stain-resistant, fairly wrinkle-resistant as well (yet creasable!) and all-around excellent.

Today I splurged and got some heavyweight wool suiting for the frock coat part of my Halloween costume (which I plan on wearing every winter, not just for one day). It is luxurious. Compared to the odd mystery polyester blend I was working with last year, and to the lining I was trying the pattern on last week, it's an absolute dream to pin the pattern to, cut, pin together, and I expect it'll be magnificent to sew and finish as well.

Not only is it marvelous to sew, it's also incredibly forgiving. O, the rapture of wool.

This actually comes from when I was playing in the orchestra for the Sing-Along Messiah. I had never really paid terribly close attention to the words of the Messiah (choral music being pretty much unintelligible to me) but the choir always sounded like they were saying 'Oh we like sheep' which I didn't understand but was amusing anyway. It wasn't until playing from the actual score of the piece that I found out it was actually called 'All We Like Sheep' – silly Handel, leaving out that crucial comma. It was then easy to turn the next line, which I heard from the depths of the string section, into 'who've gone astray,' which wasn't much of a stretch given the established Utahn phobia of diction.

A few years later my former roommate's choir sang the Messiah and I told her this story ... She has since found it impossible to keep a straight face during that movement. Mwahahaha.

It's not a surpreeese, I just doubt most anyone would have any idea ... I'm being Steerpike in his Assistant-to-Secretary-Barquentine costume from the 2000 BBC production of Gormenghast. (...modifying the coat a little to make it less specifically cool and more all-winter-long awesome and versatile...)

I don't use wool much. Generally speaking I prefer fleece.

Scarfs, on the other hand, must be made of wool. And preferably eleven feet long, but that's really just me.

I don't know why I just thought of this, but did you know that in the Old Testament there is a passage that strictly forbids the use of fabric made of two different kinds of thread woven together (it mentions wool and linen specifically)? I always wondered if that meant I was going to Hell for wearing cotton/polyester blend.
