I've been Thud!ed
Just for the record, I think Thud! is the only book that has ever given me actual chills.
I just finished re-reading it on Sunday, and realized there were a couple dozen things I meant to draw but didn't, last time. The challenge now will be keeping them near the front of my head long enough to get at least some of them drawn.
I had a really clear image of Grag Bashfullsson (whose name, I just realised, I've been spelling wrong) so I tried getting it down last night:

It didn't gel until I got on the Cintiq and hashed it out at lunch. Paint in OpenCanvas tonight at home because (AIGH!) OC doesn't work on Macs.

On second thought, perhaps I should have painted his robey thing green and the detail on his shirt red, as he is a soothing character and green tends to communicate that. But it's a pretty docile red. And I don't see the dwarfs being much into green, what with it being a surface colour and all.
If you've finished the book, scroll down; you may find this funny. If you haven't, click away now!!

Someone cried from the depths of the cave, 'Just give him his g'drjakz* cow!' I had the idea for this the first time I read the book but my sketchbook of the time is littered with failed attempts ... so I guess I have learned something in the last two years, however much I feel otherwise.

And I reckon that the red does work, on him it looks good, and any war like connections are completly stiffled by his blandly calm (and curiously comforting) facial expression. And your colouring is *really* good.
And as for Vimes and the cow... Sheer brillience.

Your Grag Bashfullsson is really cool looking. I particularly love the shape of his eyes and nose.
And in the Vimes drawing, of course, the poses and the timing is just wonderful. I laughed aloud, and my mom heard me from the other room. Poor little dwarf!

If it makes you any happier, I'm ruminating on a bit of a storyboard for the run-in at the Ramkin house, but that is a MAJOR undertaking.

Where's my Oscar?
Is that my Oscar?
It says 'Hells yeah!'
That is a Jamila!
That is not my Oscar!

Secondly; dude. Cow. WIN.
There's an actual 'Where's my cow' book, it wasn't so great, actually. In Thud! it says he once tried 'That goes 'Buggrit! Millenium hand and shrimp.', but it didn't work out. Where's My Cow contradicts that.
. . . I still really love 'That goes HRAAAUNGH. That is a hippopotamus, that is not my cow.' XD'''

I just finished Making Money, I'll be very, very interested in your opinion of Moist's latest circus....

*Canada gets the British covers! [a raspberry of desperate derision to the person who's finished Making Money already]

I love the Thud cover- I had to ship mine from England, but worth every pound.
I'd also point out Canada get Pratchett first for the signing tour as well, so I'll just cry in the corner...

You also get the proofed copies- both the first edition THUD and Making Money have some silly editorial errors.

I should probably get my own LJ account, I've posted enough...
(Anonymous) 2007-09-19 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)Second, The Vimes drawing isn't just awesome because it's a toy cow, it's awesome because it's specifically one of those squishy stress-relief cows. They are incredibly entertaining.
so um. Ta!

The watchpersons doing all the noises for Where's My Cow? was a really touching scene.
And Sybil rocks.

(Anonymous) 2007-09-20 12:55 am (UTC)(link)As for the other picture: GOOD GOD! BEST VIMES EVER! You need to draw more of berserk Vimesey (Night Watch and The Fifth Elephant). As for the cowering dwarf and ridiculously tiny cow . . . words cannot describe my speechless amazement and glee.
Yay!
(Anonymous) 2007-09-20 02:51 am (UTC)(link)Thank YOU.
Oh, and your Grag Bashfulsson is really good! I've always had problems picturing him in my head, but now I don't think I will.
As for the Ramkin-house-storyboard thing, I have to say that I loved that scene, it had a really, really, good description of just how furious Vimes was when he was running up the stairs.
Oh, and I noticed that Thud! kind of reminded me of The Ring.

Re: Thank YOU.
And ... no. Thud! is an M. Night Shyamalan movie, all the way. I'm going to have to watch Signs again before doing my board to get into his style. Just his sense of timing and limiting exactly what the audience is allowed to see and making things genuinely creepy, as opposed to just scary, would be perfect for Thud!.
