Just for the record, I think Thud! is the only book that has ever given me actual chills.

I just finished re-reading it on Sunday, and realized there were a couple dozen things I meant to draw but didn't, last time. The challenge now will be keeping them near the front of my head long enough to get at least some of them drawn.

I had a really clear image of Grag Bashfullsson (whose name, I just realised, I've been spelling wrong) so I tried getting it down last night:

It didn't gel until I got on the Cintiq and hashed it out at lunch. Paint in OpenCanvas tonight at home because (AIGH!) OC doesn't work on Macs.

On second thought, perhaps I should have painted his robey thing green and the detail on his shirt red, as he is a soothing character and green tends to communicate that. But it's a pretty docile red. And I don't see the dwarfs being much into green, what with it being a surface colour and all.

If you've finished the book, scroll down; you may find this funny. If you haven't, click away now!!

Someone cried from the depths of the cave, 'Just give him his g'drjakz* cow!' I had the idea for this the first time I read the book but my sketchbook of the time is littered with failed attempts ... so I guess I have learned something in the last two years, however much I feel otherwise.
*totally spurious Dwarfish

The Grag is cute!! Kudos for steering clear of the generic-dwarf design. I lold at Vimes and the tiny cow. I bet in the next frame, he's roaring into the dwarf's face- "WHERE'S MY COW? IS THAT MY COW? IT IS RIDICULOUSLY TINY! THAT IS NOT MY COW!"

The little toy cow kills me. And reminds me how utterly confused every dwarf must have been when Vimes went storming through shouting for a cow that wasn't there XD And Grag Bashfulsson looks awesome. I like the red too. It makes him seem warmer in a way, and I love his expression.

Damn this is good.

And I reckon that the red does work, on him it looks good, and any war like connections are completly stiffled by his blandly calm (and curiously comforting) facial expression. And your colouring is *really* good.

And as for Vimes and the cow... Sheer brillience.

Why does your Vimes remind me of Kirk Douglas??? D8

LOL< I have no idea; I only know Kirk Douglas from his caricature on Animaniacs! :)

 That's a great image of Vimesy going nuts. I felt so bad for him here. Yeah, Thud! gave me chills, too. But, of course, I was also laughing a lot when Vimes started reciting the book on time.

I think I'll have Pterry sign Where's My Cow? on Monday...

Firstly let me say this... THANK YOU FOR DOING ART FOR THUD! It's my favorite Discworld book, and I have been looking forward to your fanart for it for a VERY long time. :^) (I also just gave Thud! to my dad to read. He's just finished Going Postal, and enjoyed it immensely.)

Your Grag Bashfullsson is really cool looking. I particularly love the shape of his eyes and nose.

And in the Vimes drawing, of course, the poses and the timing is just wonderful. I laughed aloud, and my mom heard me from the other room. Poor little dwarf!

But ... but ... I've done art for Thud! before ... okay, it was just Sally and an inaccurately-coloured Dark Dwarf, but ... okay, you're right.

If it makes you any happier, I'm ruminating on a bit of a storyboard for the run-in at the Ramkin house, but that is a MAJOR undertaking.

The dynamics in the second picture are awesome. Grag looks good too, but you gotta love Crazy-Battleaxe-Vimes.

My friend Jamila and I play "Where's My Cow" all the time, and she hasn't even read any of the books. Specifically, we tend to adapt it to fit the situation. I was looking for my Oscar Wilde action figure, and this resulted:

Where's my Oscar?
Is that my Oscar?
It says 'Hells yeah!'
That is a Jamila!
That is not my Oscar!

Haha, awesome. Your Grag is really good, and I think the emotion in him portrays it perfectly. Kudos~!

Secondly; dude. Cow. WIN.

There's an actual 'Where's my cow' book, it wasn't so great, actually. In Thud! it says he once tried 'That goes 'Buggrit! Millenium hand and shrimp.', but it didn't work out. Where's My Cow contradicts that.

. . . I still really love 'That goes HRAAAUNGH. That is a hippopotamus, that is not my cow.' XD'''

Oh, good heavens, that last image is just...BRILLIANT. It fits so perfectly, it's actually quite scary. And your Grag... Can we get you to do the North American covers?

I just finished Making Money, I'll be very, very interested in your opinion of Moist's latest circus....

I would execute the American* covers by walking into HarperCollins and saying 'please, please, please buy the rights to Paul Kidby's cover art and please use it pretty please with assorted candy toppings.' This morning, in fact, I seriously considered scanning the Thud! cover calendar page to make my desktop. It is THE PERFECT COVER.

*Canada gets the British covers! [a raspberry of desperate derision to the person who's finished Making Money already]

From: [identity profile] jesidres.livejournal.com
I know, I was horrible person for mentioning that. But look! You get the Kidby covers!

I love the Thud cover- I had to ship mine from England, but worth every pound.

I'd also point out Canada get Pratchett first for the signing tour as well, so I'll just cry in the corner...

From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Waaaait ... I didn't see any Canadian cities on the tour dates ...? Or do you meant the signing I went to in 2002? I suppose that was 'first.' But not for Making Money.

From: [identity profile] jesidres.livejournal.com
Hmm, there were originally a date in Toronto. Guess it's just a minitour again. *Cries, since the closest he's coming is 4 hours away*....

You also get the proofed copies- both the first edition THUD and Making Money have some silly editorial errors.

First, HOORAY! I missed your discworld drawings! But I enjoy everything you post, ah haha.
Second, The Vimes drawing isn't just awesome because it's a toy cow, it's awesome because it's specifically one of those squishy stress-relief cows. They are incredibly entertaining.

so um. Ta!

Thud! was such a poignant book.
The watchpersons doing all the noises for Where's My Cow? was a really touching scene.

Your Grag Bashfullsson is amazing. You got the docile, pleasant dwarf look, but managed to give him a slightly mysterious expression, as befitting a grag.

As for the other picture: GOOD GOD! BEST VIMES EVER! You need to draw more of berserk Vimesey (Night Watch and The Fifth Elephant). As for the cowering dwarf and ridiculously tiny cow . . . words cannot describe my speechless amazement and glee.

Yay!

Oh, man, this makes me so unbelievably happy! :D Thud! is definitely one of my favorites, and I love to see your drawings of it! :3 So thank you very much! Poor Vimes and his cow.....:-P

Thank YOU.

I have to agree with the "BEST VIMES EVER!", I've been waiting for another drawing of him for awhile, and I'm quite glad to see that the wait paid off.
Oh, and your Grag Bashfulsson is really good! I've always had problems picturing him in my head, but now I don't think I will.
As for the Ramkin-house-storyboard thing, I have to say that I loved that scene, it had a really, really, good description of just how furious Vimes was when he was running up the stairs.

Oh, and I noticed that Thud! kind of reminded me of The Ring.

Yeah, I ought to draw more Vimes ... I've just fallen flat on my face with him so many times that I'm kind of scared to try, now.

And ... no. Thud! is an M. Night Shyamalan movie, all the way. I'm going to have to watch Signs again before doing my board to get into his style. Just his sense of timing and limiting exactly what the audience is allowed to see and making things genuinely creepy, as opposed to just scary, would be perfect for Thud!.
