Arooo!

A friend of mine recently pointed out the new Wolf Man. I've never really liked Wolf Men as they either looked like someone with overenthusiastic facial hair or overenthusiastic facial hair on rubbery prosthetics. This one I thought was the best yet, but it still looked more gorilla than wolf, I thought. Something about the thick tuft of hair atop the cranium and the naked wrinkly eyebrows ... He challenged me to design my take on a wolf man, so I thought, well, what makes a wolf look like a wolf? The snout, of course, but also the way the fur sticks out from the cheeks and the triangular ears that make a very distinctive silhouette. The long snout you can't really do well with prosthetics but there's no reason not to stick on some more lupine ears and mold the face shape with the fur, so I drew this in response:

I don't know how well it would actually work as makeup, but I hope it at least says 'wolf.'

Wut @ photos. Reminds me of Big Wolf on Campus. You know, the cheap, Canadian show on YTV?

I never saw it but it was always on the TV listings. I think Wolf Man media is just ... stuck. The first ones were limited by small budgets and what was possible at the time; now everything is trying to pay tribute to them.

Not that the ghastly werewolf in HP3 is my idea of getting unstuck, but I guess that doesn't really count as a Wolf Man.

The original Wolf Man designers would have killed for the sort of design technology we have today. Not taking advantage is just rude!

Here's a picture of the dude as a wolf (http://www.bigwolfoncampus.org/multimedia/image.php?ID=1384&includeCharacters[]=2).

Oh God, Lupin, wtf, wtf.

LOL! Still doesn't beat Oz's werewolf suit in Buffy... Tried to find a clip. Failed. Basically imagine someone in grey furry one-piece PJs trying to run on all fours.

I laughed so hard at the grey furry PJs XD

That is some cheap, cheap makeup.

[identity profile] fordanglia.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 01:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Despite this, it was an entirely entertaining TV show!

I think they showed it on ITV during the day. Never watched it, anyway.

Oh, totally! I loved it xD

I love it! There's something about the short muzzle, thick neck and forward-slung arms that taps into silverback gorilla as much as wolf, and I think it really adds to the sense of "powerful creature you *don't* want to mess with."

Long snout= See American Werewolf in London. A surprisingly funny movie.

Oh, wow, I watched that when I was a kid and totally had to sleep with the light on. I think the undead best friend freaked me out more than the wolf.

I play this online game that has werewolves in it that look a lot like that.

Maybe a bit too much like a bad ass version of Beauty and the Beast's eponymous Beast. Maybe that's just me.

[identity profile] wizardelfgirl.livejournal.com 2008-04-01 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It reminds me a bit of the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Only more wolfish. I like it.

>lackadaisical

Then for goodness sake crack open your wallet and buy one.

Are you up for, or will you be doing any commissioned drawings in the near future? I am a huge fan of your HP artwork and would like something specific. Please let me know :)

Um, this is really more of an email question, but no -- I am insanely busy and look to be so for the foreseeable future. I did take a round of commissions this summer, when I was out of work and needed a new monitor, but I still haven't even finished those. [shame]

Okay, totally off the subject, but I just had to share this with you:

I agree with wizardelfgirl that Mr. Wolf Man looks similar to the 1/2-eponymous Beast, only sleeker and more . . . uh, yeah . . . wolfish.

Only in real life that seems translate to something like this:

which is in its own way quite devastating. (Though I suppose stage make-up in this case does not equal movie make-up).

Oh, wolf men. I keep imagining in my head that they are STUDLY, FERAL, HOT WOLF MEN OF STEAMY, DREAMY LOVE that look pretty much like human beings with attractively-placed hair/fur (this is a direct result of reading wayyyy too much fantasy fiction when I was younger), but alas, the real world and terrible prosthetics/CGI keep reminding me that my fantasy is naught but a lie.

Sort of reminds me of the werewolf in an old Goosebumps video game, Escape from Horrorland... Can't seem to find a screenshot.

I do like the drawing.
