What's this, drawings?

Done my board! Done my board! Tralalala done my board! To celebrate, I scanned something I drew over the weekend.

As seen in Thud! and The Fifth Elephant (but not as scary in the latter):

Somehow they find a way of being frightening fundamentalists without actually being religious... clever, that.

I just realised that I've probably based my image of the Dark Dwarfs on those sand people from Star Wars, which is something, as I haven't seen that movie more than five times and that was ages ago.

[ducks the hail of rotten veggies from the Star Wars corner]

I love the coloring in the second picture.

Deep down dwarfs

[identity profile] ianfinerty.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like your design for the deep downers, the second one looks pretty menacing. The scene where they tunnel into the house was one of my favourites from Thud!, it really hightened the tension and showed what i might be like if full out war broke out into the city. It proved that even Vimes, who can usually deal with anything, would not be in control. Scary stuff.
My one critisism would be that the flame thrower dwarfs were described i thik with a non descript helmet which covered their face- something like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v739/ugluktheurukhai/dwarf.jpg

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I have yet to double-check in the book, but my own train of logic goes like this:
The flamethrower thingies were developed for use in clearing explosive mine gas. The job of clearing explosive mine gas belonged to that elite society of crazies who wanted to do that sort of thing. They adopted layers of protective leather and such to shield them against explosions. As the mine gas clearers would have been the ones to use the flamethrowers, it stands to reason that the flamethrower-users would be wearing the traditional layers of protective leather and such. Yes?

flame thrower dwarfs

Yes...but the ones who use the flamerthrowers are described thusly:
"The two new dwarfs were covered from head to toe in leather, like Ardent, but wore mail over the top of it; their helmets were quite unadorned, but covered the whole face and head, with only a slit for eyes. Each dwarf carried a large black pack on his back and held a lance in front of him."

Okeydokey, thanks for the verification.

O_o ... uuummmm... okaaaayyyy.

*cough, cough* *interpretation* *cough, cough*

[identity profile] jesidres.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa. Evil dwarfs of doom!
I habe to agree that scene in Thud is really gripping, although I never had a clear image of the dwarfs before, you've gone and ruined that. which is a good thing.

[identity profile] miss-ida.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
whoa scary!
i just borrowed the first discworld book...

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I especially love their pointy hoods. Man, I will never get over the image of one of these guys now; a, what, three foot bearded guy covered in a leather dress shooting fire at you. Hilarious, yet terrifying.

You know, none of your posts show up for me!? On my f-list, I mean. It's pretty bewildering. :(

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Weird. Maybe LJ hates me. You show up on my f-list...

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
*strokes chinless beard beardless chin*

Are you backdating, maybe? I think that keeps posts from showing up . . .

Or maybe LJ does just hate you. :(

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
But ... but ... that first post on your blog is dated like 2010 or something - wouldn't that be backdating? Hmm. Well, my Thud! Explanation Post is probably near the end of its run of usefulness....

[identity profile] gabbysun.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It's actually backdated to October 30th, but yeah, same thing. xD

I mean, is each individual post you make backdated? I don't think it should be a problem if the first one is, but I hypothesize that backdated posts don't show up.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Clever ... veeery clever.

Okay, Thud post, you go bye-bye now.

or rather...

[identity profile] thelowkeyloki.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
you know, they look more like the creatures from SpaceBalls, rather than Star Wars...

dinkdink...dinkdinkdinkDINK DINK dink....dinkdink....dinkdinkdinkDINK DINK DINK!

[identity profile] sparrowofjack.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you don't show up on the friends list because of your top post dated in December. Because, you know, TECHNICALLY it hasn't showed up yet. Congratulations, Tealin, you have successfully completed your first time-travel voyage.

And um... the line drawing looks like a member of the KKK. On the plus side, you have made them very frightening.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well ... they are kind of KKK.

[identity profile] spicedfries.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. I was gonna say.. they look like Sand People mixed w/ the KKK.
Interestingly enough, I didn't notice the resemblance to the KKK until I saw the colored one. Then again, I generally don't notice words that are written larger than the surrounding text which leads to some confusion when reading warning sign. (IE, I completely missed the giant "DO NOT" and thought the sign said "Let Your Children Play On The Rolling Stool" which I thought was a rather odd sign to have up in a doctor's office.)

[identity profile] salamandersoup.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, geez. I'm having the same problem Gabbysun has - none of your updates are showing up on my friend's list. And here I was thinking you just weren't posting anything new. Then today I finally have enough sense to go to your actual journal and see several days worth of posting. A sum of my opinions on all the delicious drawing things I've missed = VODE!

[identity profile] miss-ida.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
i knew there was something the drawings reminded me of: KKK!
thanks!

tealin: it was very little art you did with Half-blood prince..
i have a kind of feeling that you are missing something.
the same feeling with Order of the Phoenix art <_<...

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Order of the Phoenix just didn't inspire me. I'm not going to make myself draw stuff from a book I didn't enjoy when there are many more interesting things to occupy my pencil – it's my free time, anyway, it's not a job. Half Blood Prince, well, it was a little more inpiring, but I'm such a fiction addict I had to start reading something else right away so it kind of cut into my HBP drawing time.

[identity profile] miss-ida.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah okay..
i think the book i made most drawings too must be order of the phoenix...
half blood prince wasnt so inspiring though...but i thought Order of the Phoenix was indeed...

just wanted to see how you for example picture some of the rooms in the department of mysteries, sirius death, etc.

[identity profile] indomituslupus.livejournal.com 2005-10-22 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
lol awesome! They remind me of lil short men in unwashed KKK uniforms, while holding something that will take down a whale underwater or something. Wouldnt want to get near those things!

Hmm?

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2005-10-23 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I see those pictures, and I think: Stone Pilot. If you've never read any of the Edge Chronicles that won't mean anything to you, but that's what they look like.

Dwarf picture

It vaguely reminds me of Quellor from Teddy Ruxpin.

That is to say, if you were going for "threatening and scary", you've succeeded.
