Visualizing Cabin Pressure

Thanks to the iPlayer, I have never really been able to picture the characters in Cabin Pressure as looking anything unlike the actors who play them ... this is fine for Douglas and Carolyn, but Martin in particular is supposed to be the opposite of tall and authoritative Benedict Cumberbatch, so as I was mainlining the show yesterday I tried to force myself to picture him in a new way, and came up with someone who's somewhere between Steve Punt and Schmendrick the Magician.

At one point I was worried he might be looking too much like a hypothetical Arthur, so I drew an Arthur, and I'm much happier with that drawing than any of the others ... but that's Arthur for you. And I apologise sincerely to Roger Allam for that dreadful caricature. I will actually use reference in the future; this was more for scale than anything ...
I've been mainlining Cabin Pressure the last few days in an attempt to stay focused on work and keep from brooding; something must be working because not only am I in a better mood but I'm not even turning into Douglas, which is a documented side-effect of my prolonged exposure to the show. If I could get the winning-at-everything and brilliantly manipulative side, that might make up for the increased proficiency with eloquent snidery, but unfortunately my aptitude for character osmosis only goes so far.
And if you have no clue what any of this is about, let me introduce you to the brilliance: Series 1, Epsiode 1: Abu Dhabi. They're all on YouTube, but once you are convinced that they are worth owning forever, it's really much nicer to buy the series and listen to it at your leisure on your mobile device of choice with a clear conscience, don't you think?

Date: 2013-09-23 08:17 pm (UTC)This show is soooo good, i'm very glad i found it.
And you are right, it's not easy capturing Martin because he is clever, but not enough to avoid being always outsmarted by Douglas... so you tend to Arthurize him. Maybe the hair makes him look more naive and young, but in general i could tell he was martin before reading your post.
:)
