Got half an hour? The first episode of Mort is up on BBC7. (requires RealPlayer) It works till Saturday; sorry for the late notice. It's an okay rendition, though I have never heard a proper explanation for why no one can do Death's voice right.*

In other news, they've got the cast list for Hogfather up at Paul Kidby's news site. I have high hopes for Ian Richardson's sepulchral Hogfather, even though I've only ever really seen him in one thing. [insert shame here] Everyone else I just don't know at all. [further shame] I'd have liked to see Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Teatime, but what can you do? Though, come to think of it, I've only seen him in one thing too ... same thing as Ian Richardson, oddly enough. Thank you, Gormenghast, for introducing me to the wonderful world of British casting.

*By 'right' of course I mean, broadly, 'as it is described in the books' or, specifically, 'like I hear it in my head.' Just hike up the bass, darken the tone colour, throw in a sprinkling of reverb ... is it that hard?

O cool! A book I've actually read getting the radio play treatment! I actually like Mort ^_^

Thanks for this. Would've completely espaced my notice otherwise.

The idea of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Teatime just made my brain explode. I'VE NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT, BUT IT'S BRILLIANCE. BRILLIANCE

Gormenghast is a cool, cool movie. The book I can't quite read through.

Woah! JR-M would make a fantastic Teatime! And thanks for the links! *listens to Mort*

Whoa. I've never read Mort, but so far I'm lovin' this radio production.

Funny that you mention Gormenghast. I went to pick up the rest of the series this afternoon but it wasn't available at the Book Warehouse. Going to try Chapters tomorrow. Tx for the heads up on Mort!

And Christopher Lee voiced Death well. Just too bad the movie in general was so terrible. I don't remember if they added a lot of reverb but I seem to recall some...

The fact that the cast list doesn't match up had me puzzling why Teatime was such an old man for about 5 minutes.

And Jonathan Rhys-Meyers as Te-ah-Tim-eh is inspired. Have you heard the Tony Robinson tapes of all the Discworld books? His Death is quite good.

I've listened to a couple but the abridgedness was a little off-putting ... add to that the library only had three and The Light Fantastic had a broken tape, and ... yeah. I suspect Tony Robinson would do a good Nobby, but that's primarily based on Nobby being like Baldrick, in a way, just more competently cunning.

I haven't read the Hogfather, but based on your drawing of Teatime, Marc Warren definitely has the crazy eyes required for the part. And he is very good in Hustle. Apart from David Jason I've never heard of any of the rest of the cast...

And is it me or do all the wizards look like they're off to some kind of convention in handmade beards?

Yeah, they are heavily abridged. They do unabridged versions but they aren't Tony Robinson. Also they last about a year.

I haven't actually heard Tony Robinson's Nobby, we started at the beginning but sort of petered out, but his Nanny Ogg is excellent.

So cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a fox?

The little snippet I've heard of his rendition did seem pretty good, but it's good to know the performance carried through ... silly me for doubting Christopher Lee. A pity they didn't just release it as a radio play.

Tried the library yet? Only, y'know, it's um ... free. And you'd likely get to read a nice cushy hardcover as opposed to an austere paperback.

Ahoy!

I got all but one, though to be honest I guessed on a lot of them. What does that make me?

It should say after the quiz. I suppose I should've payed more attention to the actual historical aspect of the film instead of waiting for Paul Bettany to disrobe as he has in all his other films. Shame.
But I hear they're making a sequel. Though sequels usually give me indigestion, hopefully this one'll be at least on the halfway decent side.

Thanks for this! I will enjoy listening to it!

Yes, I saw the info and images on Paul Kidby's site. That movie is going to be something! Interesting how more and more movies are being filmed in Romania, I guess for the older architecture and the scenery and low filming costs. The film "Cold Mountain" was done there, and they did an amazing job of making the Carpathians look like the Appalachians of North Carolina.

BTW, the first episode of Mort was great!

I think the sound effects are what made it so. They were excellent. I actually could envision being in Death's kitchen or galloping on a great white stallion looking at the world laid out below our feet. Binky sounded really cute, too!

Yup, I agree Death could have had a more echoing ominous voice. I guess I always heard James Earl Jones in my mind, but I liked the idea here of Death with a more grandfatherly tone- but it should have echoed more- sounded more immortal somehow.

'S funny, but I'm in the middle of Mort right now.

I think the guy who plays Mort is great. As for Death...he sounds like a weird mix between Voldemort and Saruman. With an echo effect. And then later he sounds like Richard Harris.

Eh. S'pose I should just finish the book. ^_^
