A generous friend of mine was kind enough to burn me a CD of H.P. Lovecraft stories, which I hadn't been introduced to before. Here's an attempt at depicting 'the Innsmouth look' ... I'm afraid it came out rather more as a graphic style than a set of physical characteristics. Mike Mignola seems to be able to do it possibly without even trying, though he's brillant and well-read enough it's probably conscious.

Yes, nothing better than great squiddy deities and dark carnal rites to get one in the Christmas spirit... but it's the only thing this week that's managed to keep me concentrating on work.

Not bad---although I think that the Innsmouth look includes going bald young, and having a rather wrinkly neck.

The little girl with the Innsmouth look looks rather cute...:)

I tried including a sort of simplified wrinkly neck but I guess it isn't terribly clear ... and yeah, they came out looking not creepy at all... which is very much not the point. Sigh. Must work on the creepiness.

And I should mention that I wrote one Harry Potter filksong where Luna Lovegood explained (when cornered by Lord Voldemort at the water's edge) that her mommy's family had come from Innsmouth:

"Rising up from the foam, come from my mother's home,
My mother's kin have come to save me!

"Now that the stars are right, rising up in their might,
Come from the North, West, East and South,
Look what you made me do---Dagon has come for YOU!
Couldn't you tell that I'm from Innsmouth?"

And Lord Voldemort would be LETTING GO OF THE LITTLE GIRL, like right NOW---and backing away, smiling like a whipped dog and making nice as hard as he could: "Er---hi there! Nice day, isn't it, Dagon---sir---my lord? I...wasn't going...to...hurt the little girl!" Meanwhile, Dagon is staring down at him with a Joan-Crawford-at-Christina glare on his face.

Of course, Umbridge has the Look too---and it's more advanced! I did read a story once where she was reflecting on how hard it was to NOT take to the water.

The song's up at the Harry Potter Filks website---I don't have the URL, but Google "Harry Potter Filk" and you'll find it.

I may just write the "Luna's from Innsmouth---sucks to be YOU, Voldie!" story some time. I've already written a lot of HP fic under my nom-de-fanfic of "Technomad," including a full-length HP-LOTR crossover.

But even a very minor Old One, like Dagon, could stomp on Voldie like he was a grape.

Heheheheheee... my Innsmouth folk might be cute but they're not nearly as cute as THAT....

You know, oddly enough, I pictured the Innsmouth Look almost exactly like that in your movie still. And yes, Lovecraft was a bit of a nutter ... but it's visually interesting anyway. I got the impression from the story that it was rather his Oriental xenophobia coming into play in Innsmouth, though, what with the talk of the traders from the East and South Sea Islanders.

OH MY GOSH! Lovecraft illustrations! Ok that's awesome.
I think I ened to re-read the story because for teh life of me, I can't place it, but I adore lovecrafts monsters. They're great.

And a CD? As in audio? Read by who?

All sorts of people... I think it's just a collection of what he could find online, so there are radio plays by any number of different companies (including one recorded live at DragonCon, Tann) and some just plain readings, all by different people, including one who sounds almost like a simulated voice at first.

Ah, the Innsmouth look.
The saddest thing is that the latest HPL Dagon film is going to star Tori Spelling.

They even have the audacity to call it "Cthulhu".

MEH
