Cooking is Chemistry, After All
Nov. 12th, 2011 10:47 amA hundred years ago today, the men and ponies of the Southern Journey were still slogging their way across the Ross Ice Shelf. They came across the second motor sledge, abandoned after a similar cylinder problem to the previous one, but I forgot to post when this happened ...
Anyway, I invite you now to cast your mind back a little further to the ninth of October, when Thomas Clissold, the company's cook, fell off an iceberg while serving as a compositional element for the photographer, injuring his back and putting him out of service for a few weeks. Other people took over cooking duties: one set of replacements was Atch Atkinson (the official doctor, also doing work on parasitology) and Petty Officer Pat Keohane.
I didn't have time to work up a design of Keohane, but the image of Atch in the kitchen was too good to pass up.
