ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO TODAY, Scott was visited again by his old friend indigestion,* but things were generally looking up. The hard blue ice of the glacier, which Shackleton had described from his trip up it in 1908/9, and on which Scott had based his projections for travel time and ease, was discovered to be only two feet below the surface of the snow, and later in the day, one. People were recovering from the snowblindness that had been endemic when they started manhauling, and it was warm enough they did away with most of their outerwear.
