I have a theory that the reason the Mayans predicted the world would end in 2012* is because by the time December 21st rolls around, all the good movies that are destined ever to be made will have been made. The ancient Mesoamericans had no concept of film so they didn't know why the world should cease to exist after that date, but there you have it. This is backed up by such hard scientific data as a)the number of disappointing to truly awful films that have come out in the last five years (the decline) and b)the number of very promising and so far excellent films in 2012 (cramming in the remaining quality films of destiny). Well, BBC ... you're just playing into the game.
