Truly we live in a halcyon age. This is it, the peak, the acme, that moment when civilisation hits its zenith and from which the inevitable decline will be measured. And why? Is it the internet, connecting people in ways that have never been possible before, leading to unprecedented humanism and shared consciousness? Is it how much easier our lives are with daily advances in technology? Is it global warming turning a staycation into a tropical holiday, and suggesting the possibility of that most fun-filled of provinces, Bananitoba?

No! It is none of these things! These are mere baubles! Let it be marked forever in the annals of history that this was our greatest hour, quite literally, because we have two half-hour episodes of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme available concurrently! Missed last week? No matter, it is on R4x! Tired of listening to that episode? Listen to the new one on Radio 4! What is a flying car, by comparison? A cheap trick, that is all. Revel, humanity.

Then, should too much comedy be getting you down, switch over to 1958 Nottingham for a jaunt about town with Arthur Seaton, angry young man. Well, maybe not so much angry as bored and full of himself ... It's another world, though, and while I may not find much to like in the main character, personally, it's a fantastic production from top to bottom, and happily proves that singular talent can shine on both sides of the radio studio glass. (Though it was recorded on location, so it's only conceptual glass.)

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, Part 1 and Part 2 are both available, because did I mention, halcyon? I believe I did.
