Radio Roundup
Aug. 11th, 2015 06:49 pmMoving onto tie-down animation means I can put aside the music and get back to Intelligent Speech, as Radio 4 quite rightly brands itself. It's a good thing the BBC has extended their programming's listen-again time to a month, because there's been a lot to catch up on.
DOCUMENTARY
Ken, Madge, and the Strange Rock - A man and his dog find a funny-smelling lump on a beach. Is it treasured ambergris?
COMEDY
I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue - "The godfather of all panel shows" is back, with five episodes currently available, so you can laugh yourself sick if you want to.
Cabin Pressure Series 3 has been rerunning, though only three episodes are still available. Luckily, two of them are some of the best radio comedy you will ever hear.
DRAMA
Moby Dick - From much of the same team that brought you all my Scott obsession (though they didn't know it at the time), a dramatisation of the classic seafaring novel.
Gulliver's Travels - I was never much taken with the story, but this is an excellent dramatisation wherein Gulliver gets an unusually sympathetic performance. Do listen through the third episode as that's kind of the whole point of it, which is often lost amongst Lilliputians.
READINGS
Nine Billion Names of God - A series of readings of Arthur C. Clarke's brilliant short stories, starting with the title piece. Highly recommended.
Meet David Sedaris - the American humourist, transplanted to Britain, reads some of his short stories. Episode 2 has an entertaining insight into the difference between Brits and Americans.
Go Set a Watchman - The new To Kill a Mockingbird "sequel" which has made such a fuss. It's abridged into five 15-minute episodes, but the abridgment is by Robin Brooks who is a master.
