Yes, the main problem, that they were too cute... Try to add details: the scales, growing bare hair, spiteful expression of persons, make young more extended, and old more fat and fishy. There should be no human expressions - only stupidness and angry! Do not try to make your cute men ,whom you usually draw, scary monsters - try to make monsters more antropomorph. It's hard to explain - I'll try to draw it myself.
