Frog Trailer Screencaps Ahoy!

I resized them down a leetle to save excess loading time (if you want full-res you can download your own trailer!) and fiddled with the contrast and saturation (though I may be thrown off by monitor calibration). There are a couple of image banks where you can find practically any screencap you want (this one is useful...) so I'm not going to waste waking hours clutter up my LJ with redundant images. I'm only putting up ones about which I have something to say that might be of interest, or which I particularly like but you might miss when watching the trailer at speed.

In absolutely no order whatsoever:

So pretty.

SO MANY HAPPY ANIMALS.

How do they make dirty stagnant water look so pretty?

The shadows are SO FREAKING AWESOME YOU GUYS.

The obligatory A113 reference (it was the classroom number for character animation at CalArts back in the day) ... what amuses me is not so much its presence but the fact that there is at least one vehicle in this movie that does NOT have A113 on it.

A few of the masks are caricatures of crew members, but they mostly got hidden when the layering got done.

A subtle thing, but extremely cool: look at the pattern on the curtain. Do you see it? Look harder.

Katie, this one is for you:

I solemnly swear on all that is holy that I had nothing to do with this. I was hoping against hope that they'd colour his hair dark so it would be plainer. I'm glad this shot was in the trailer because otherwise I'd have had to wait almost two years from when I originally saw it, when it comes out on DVD, to show you.

There are many awesome things about Dr Facilier but one of my favourites is how rewarding it is to stop-frame his scenes.

OH YEAH BABY. (In case you're wondering, the masking got a little messed up but it'll be fixed in the final film)

This is so amazing. The drawing looks beyond stunning.

[identity profile] danicarip.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE.

...because I get to see the art of TEALIN HERSELF 18-foot-high where all around is dark. In comfy seats. This is beyyyyyyond amazing to me, who not so many years ago was scrolling through the Azkaban Project in a reverent hush :D Seriously, *amazing.*

[identity profile] theatreotter.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto to all of the above. Can't wait!

[identity profile] little-werewolf.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Wooow I am supposed to tell you from my classmate next to me, and of course from me as well, that you did a very good job!!!!!!!!

It looks really beautiful. I can't wait for the movie to come out. Absolutely love the trailer as well.

*does a round of squeeing*

[identity profile] my2k.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
OH MY GOD
DID YOU EVER MENTION YOU WERE IN THIS? OR DID I JUST NOT READ IT?? OMG I HAD NO IDEA!
Also maaaan I agree, not only is Facilier a great name but he looks so... classic villain-y. I can't wait to see more. Is he wearing a waistcoat over.. nothing? Dude.
God I am so damn stoked, SO damn stoked.

man I can't... I can't figure out what's hidden in the pattern though :(

ohhh edit: clear something up for me, where is Naveen from? It's Portugal, right??

[identity profile] kairii1989.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
The pattern looks like scull and crossbones to me, but I could be wrong...

omg tealin's drawings in a disney movie man I am nearly tearing up here

sorry you have no idea who I am but I've been following your sites and stuff since I was little and had no accounts and you're just amazing

AND this is going to be so good, I am well hyped!

[identity profile] ubiquitouspitt.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Lookin good!

I think Marc would be very upset by your comment! Seeing as how he was born and raised in a swamp |: ) I doubt you're surprised. Most super villains come from fell places...

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Not a briar patch?

Oh wait, then he'd have to be an ENTP... ;)

[identity profile] catmoran.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
The pretty guy in your drawing is a total hottie. Which just makes the other guy look that much more like an orangutan. :D

[identity profile] canisdoofus.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
YEY!!!

This movie looks like it will hit so close to home what with all the Old Dixie swampiness and all, and I'm so glad (not to mention JEALOUS) you had a part in it! ^_^ Congrats: this is definitely a masterpiece!

My favorite still however is the "happy animals" one. Those roseate spoonbills are made entirely of AWESOME! :D And you just can't have a Bayou!movie without a lovable alligator. Also, I couldn't help but notice that those birds (are they herons?) on the trees look very much like that lanky goofball!bird in Pixar's short, For the Birds (possibly my favorite Pixar short).

Only please let me know one thing: do those snakes blink? Please say 'no'! It irks me to NO END when cartoon!serpents (and fish, though at least most fish dissimulate by rolling their eyes in their sockets, making it appear as though they can 'close' their eyes) have eyelids!!! Granted, one of my favorite Disney villains is Kaa, but his constant blinking makes me want to throw something!

Thanks for these!

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Speaking as someone with love for both animation and science: yes, the snake blinks, but that is because this is a cartoon, and blinks (well, eyelids in general) are very important for acting and expression, and making a drawing feel alive, especially when the character is mute. These are sacrifices that must be made for character, story, and entertainment, just as cartoon herbivores tend to have their eyes mounted forward rather than to the side, all animals have eyebrows, humans have severe glaucoma, and the iris is always surrounded by far more white than anything you'd find in nature.

Ah, Rafiki--I see what you did thar. Nice effect in the shadow. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's supposed to look like connected frogs outside the shadow, right?

Everything looks incredible. Whenever I see stuff from this, I'm amazed at the COLORS. Can't wait 'til it comes out.

Ahaha, the hand isn't THAT bad, lol. And, since everyone else is mentioning it, I must put forth that I started following your art in and around grade 6... which was around 2001, I believe, as I just finished my first year of animation college. :) I do believe it was your influence that made me read Pratchett and try out the Decemberists, so good job there. 8D

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's not bad, really, it should just be behind Lawrence.

Ahahaha, my influence is spreading! Yes! :D (I assume you had a positive experience with Pratchett and the Decemberists...)

I really ought to make that 'mwahahaha' icon...

[identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I caught the 'skull' part of the pattern, but the 'crossbones' passed me by until that poster said to look in his shadows.

He's called Naveen... Why wouldn't he have dark hair?

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
No no, the photographer ... here (http://www.nocturnalsoldier.org/Tealin/xhp/vfd/jacques-firec.jpg), thisis what I was referring to (I think it was drawn in ... 2004?)

Going pic by pic...
1) Cool because it's just HINTING at all the awesome things in the room. And hey, is that a Djembe on the right?
2) PURTY COLORS! Also, kind of reminiscent of Little Mermaid.
3) Yeah dude, that water is beautiful, like a Monet painting. And the wagillator kinda looks like one of the dream-elephants in Dumbo - you know, the one who plays his snout as a trumpet?
4) Good old Cal Arts...
5) Oh TELL me that mask on the left with the glasses is someone you know. That guy (girl?) is cool.
6) Am I the only one who sees the pattern as a nude female torso? Looks more like it two pictures later.
7) Whaddya MEAN you had nothing to do with putting someone who is obviously Jacques Snicket in the crowd?! Did it ever occur to you that whoever drew that was checking out your fanart? 'Cause that's the only explanation *I* can think of...
8) What IS he holding?... A splatter of pink cake? A glob of Spin Art? A painting of a cycloptic rabbit with a pig snout?
9) AUGH OMIGOD THAT ONE IS YOURS!!! Squeeeee!!!!

I love you Tealin!! xoxoxo You're amazing.

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
1) It probably is a Djembe, those layout people luurrv their reference photos. Also there is a coffin which, okay, slightly less musicologically esoteric but the questions...!
5) Yup, it's one of the directors. They always get caricatured in their movies, and they've got at least two in this one. The other director is the long thin 'surfboard' mask with the moustache.
6) Wow Katie, you so craz– OMG I SEE IT! Heehee. We had a joke in layout class, because our teacher was also the life drawing teacher, that the way to get him to like any location design was to put a naked lady statue in it. Well!
7) I SWEAR, I don't think I was even working on the show when that scene was animated (or had just started). I'm pretty sure he was designed by Eric Goldberg, and if Mr Goldberg is browsing Snicket fanart online I would be very surprised... Regardless, I am convinced it is Jacques Snicket, whether he was intended to be or not. Look, he's not even taking a picture of Naveen! His camera is pointed at someone or something offscreen – he's clearly using the crowd as a means of photographing something undetected.
8) Um ... have you watched the trailer in full? It's a little pile of powder on a card.

YAAAAAAAAAY!!!!

[identity profile] beckychan.livejournal.com 2009-05-12 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Your drawing is IN THE TRAILOR!!!!! That is SO DAMN COOL!!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2009-05-13 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Is that a Ron Clements I see in the mask shot?

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yes it is, and if you look you can also find a John Musker! :)

[identity profile] raddishh.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Woah, very nice drawing indeed! Haha, it's so cool that you're able to point out your work in the trailer!

The subtle pattern behind Dr Facilier is so clever, I noticed it before I read your description. :D GOD THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL.

Gonna go be a dork and make an icon or two from this. 8D

[identity profile] nqn.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
That's YOUR DRAWING. That's like... Every artist's dream to have a drawing in a Disney film and in it's TRAILER. YOU KNOW THAT RIGHT. x)

It makes me proud to say I'm going to the same animation school you went to, heh. :D

[identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOOOOOOOW! I think my heart skipped a beat when I saw my scene in the rough cut of the trailer.

[identity profile] ubiquitouspitt.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Marc and I were just on here looking at the photos again - and we are so excited about the movie - and for you. We've decided to go see it together on opening night :)

[identity profile] moonmystique.livejournal.com 2009-05-13 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
OMG awesome! We were talking that the masks could probably be caricatures. Of course not sure who, and I'm not familiar enough with disney staff to be able to pick them out if I don't know who I'm looking for..

The swampy painting is beautiful! It has inspired my film idea as of late.

3. Cheezits, sherry and more chips, Doc F is hawwwt. FINGERS! And OMG PURPLE EYES! EEEEE! I think I feel a new addition to my VILF list coming on....
