tealinIn my continuing mission to consume all possible information on the Scott expedition,1 I have recently read Sara Wheeler's biography of Cherry. It was sad in unexpected ways, but interesting ... One point of interest was that during the second winter, when it was 'morally certain' that the polar party was not going to return, Cherry's sketchbook hosts some special guests.

This episode also welcomes to my own sketchbook Surgeon E.2L. Atkinson (a.k.a. Atch) – for whom I actually used photo reference! A shocking break from tradition, I know. Still not terribly happy with my result3 but it's a starting place, anyway.

1Except for The Last Place on Earth, which ... is the caraway-seedy overcooked cabbage on the dessert plate, so to speak. I may get to it eventually, but ... uuuungh.
2Atch was one of the Edwards who Antarctica had it in for.
3I think I need to make him a little less rugged? There were so many non-angular faces in that group, I thought it would make a good differentiation, but I might have gone too far ...
