My perception on why Sophie became cursed was #1 the witch knew she had been with howl and was possibly jealous. #2. No one ever talks back or tries to kick her out of a place, if they do, she’ll curse them. The reason Sophie takes Calcifer out of the castle is because Calcifer is keeping the house together and tied in with the locations around the country. Howl was fighting to protect Sophie who was located in the town. If she takes Calcifier out, the connection with the castle and the town will be severed and Howl will no longer need to fight to save the house in the town. I believe that was Sophie’s logic when she did that act. That's how I interpreted it anyways. That is all.
