Day 6 of my Lent project. For background, please read this.

Continuing the Christmas story, Mary goes to visit her cousin Elizabeth, whose unborn child leaps at her approach.

And Mary said,

"My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
For in the fruit of my womb,
He has exalted me above all women.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
For the Mighty One has done great things for me,
And holy is his name.
His love is for those who praise him from generation to generation.
He has shown great strength with his arm;
He has lifted the pious in the confidence of their hearts.
He has rewarded them with positions of power,
And held back the undeserving.
He has satisfied the desires of his faithful,
And deprived those who displease him.
He has glorified his chosen Nation,
In remembrance of its righteousness,
According to the promise made to the Pilgrim Fathers,
And to George and the Presidents thereafter."

Luke 1:46-55

And Mary said,

"My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,
For he has looked upon the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
For the Mighty One has done great things for me,
And holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
He has shown great strength with his arm;
He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
And lifted up the lowly;
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
In remembrance of his mercy,
According to the promise he made to our ancestors,
To Abraham and his descendants for ever."

Fun fact: Mary's words, known collectively as 'The Magnificat', from the first word of the first line in Latin (Magnificat anima mea Dominum), have been deemed so subversive through history that they were banned by various governments for encouraging insurrection. The Magnificat has been included in the Evensong service in the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer since it was first compiled, but was forbidden in British India. More on its revolutionary nature here.
