Well, it was bound to happen eventually, I'm just surprised it's so soon:

Disney Closes Australian Studio

The end of cheapquels? Well, 2D cheapquels anyway. Or are they going to farm them out to service studios?

Don't really know what to make of it, to be honest.

well, on the one hand - no more cheapquels! they're an embarrassment to the Disney legacy. on the other hand... no more traditional animation... the Disney legacy dies here. sad.

on a completely unrelated note, does Canada get the British jacket for Pterry's books? if they do, I'm going to start buying them online, 'cos the American artwork just doesn't compare. I especially liked Paul Kidby's Night Watch (Rembrandt parody... nice), and Thud! is just cool.

Perhaps they'll end up pouring dedication, amazingly beautiful and life-like animation, heart-filled songs and most of all: money - into their sequels from now until the end of time. Also, anyone with a pet goat should be getting their academy award right around now.

Well, too bad for anyone with a steady, long-running job there. Like the janitors. Oh, those poor guys.

All rude comments aside, remember me? (Do many people ask you that?)

I wrote you a LONG AND CHARMING email back in autumn, regarding schools of animation in Ontario. You told me about Sheridan (I'm sure I'll never get in, by the way) But I wanted to thank you for bothering to reply.

You're my hero of animation and all related factors. And if, in 36 years, I have the power and money to put together a high-budget animated feature for some reason, even though this is not my goal in life - you are SO my character designer.

At least Pixar will be opening up a 2D animation studio, so maybe once THEY have a huge 2D success then Disney will come crawling back to ink and paint only ink and paint should make it beg first. *sigh*

If you didn't know, er, SaveDisney totally folded. I don't know what a Director Emeritus is, but until I hear otherwise, I'll just call it "lands and titles."

*ahem*

. . .

Sort of a victory for animation, but a disaster for animation, period.

WHY? WHY DID THEY EVEN MAKE SEQUELS? WHY!?

I seriously hope Pixar's 2D thing works. Because that would be amazing, and Disney would be properly SHAMED.

Rumours of a Pixar 2D studio are unsubstantiated at best. I recall John Lasseter being asked about such a thing and he said something like 'Well, if we ever decide to do a movie that would be better suited for 2D, then we might think about it.' Name a movie that would be better suited for 2D. Besides something Snickety with Brett Helquist's designs, of course. Come on, think harder! See? Kind of hard. Remember, better suited for 2D, not looks good in 2D. 'Cause, frankly, lots of things look better in 2D.

Our bets hope is that a) some little studio founded by ex-feature people comes out with something good that gets an excellent distribution deal and marketing or b) one of the European 2D features makes it over here and becomes a big hit. (Please, Nocturna, pleeeease!)

that's just... blah!

That's sad. So sad. I don't like the new 3Ds... They don't have any heart, any soul, they're just... humorous but not worth watching over and over again like the lovely classics.

Yes! We get the magnificent Kidby covers! They are so worth it!!

And the Monstrous Regiment cover is a parody of that famous Iwo Jima photo/sculpture.

NO! How could they? Sure, I've liked the computer animated movies like Shrek and The Incredibles, but I've always liked the hand-drawn ones better. Could you imagine what the Hunchback of Notre Dame or the Road to El Dorado would have looked like if they had been computer animated? Disaster! Besides, I've always associated Disney with 2D: heck that practically IS disney! I hope Pixar gets a 2D studio. Gabbysun's right: Disney deserves to be shamed.

Ugh. I revoked my adoration of Disney as a company a year or so ago. This still made me sigh remorsefuly and whine "WHYYYY?" at the computer screen.
