Yes, it's that time of year again, so here's the first installment of the Daily Sketchbook Quota:

Handy Handy Hand Hands

I was looking at my Clacks board the other day, which I drew just after Dragons 2 and just before the Dessert Dish Incident, and got depressed. Aside from all the other skills I've lost, I realized I haven't had to draw hands at work for seven months so any advantage I may have had at drawing them is lost ... time to start over.

And yes, I know the clenched fist is some sort of fascist and/or Northern Irish partisan symbol but dangit, fists are HARD TO DRAW, so cut me a little slack, wouldja?

I have life drawing tonight so that'll count as today's...

All about Lent

Ok, I actually read all that stuff about Lent, and the High Holy Days, and I have to say, with the utmost respect and affection in my heart for you and your cherished faith...your religion is WAY too complicated. ;)
Also...if I understand it completely (which is doubtful), aren't you supposed to give up doing something you like, or do something hard or charitable that isn't necessarily fun? Or do you plan on doing "hard" sketches for 40 days (drawing stuff you're not good at, or don't normally like to draw - do hands fall in that category?) Just curious...

BTW, I am almost back - I will give a full report of the ecstacy and the agony (mostly the latter) shortly...

Lent can be a number of things. The focus is on the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert before he started his ministry. Observant Catholics can give stuff up (like sweets, sloth, etc) or do stuff (like read scripture, go to daily Mass, exercise). We gain strength and commitment by taking strength from Jesus' experience. Basically, we do things that improve us as people, mentally, spiritually, and/or physically.

Glad to have you back, sooner or later.

Complex hierarchies, multi-level Heaven, idiosyncratic food prohibitions, Fast Sundays, and temple recommends: with the utmost respect and affection in my heart for you and your cherished faith, your religion is way too compilicated. ;)

Lent is basically about reflection, prayer, and self-discipline. It lasts forty days and the three holy days at the end (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter) are the pinnacle of the liturgical year, comemmorating the three important days surrounding the cornerstone of Christianity, Christ's resurrection. That's really all there is to it. Further complications and historical variations are the realm of theologians. Analogy: You don't need to be an expert on the electoral college and the impeachment process to participate in democracy.

Hope to see you back soooon...
