I'm a legionnaire
Camel in disrepair
hoping for a frigid air
to come passing by...

Some people claim I am bright but this is evidence of my overwhelming cluelessness: I actually thought it was Frigidaire. I didn't just mishear it, I thought it was intentionally written that way. (Heck, if I was a legionnaire stuck in the desert with a broken-down camel, I'd fantasize about a Frigidaire coming my way.) Well, at least I got a good drawing out of it.

YESTERDAY'S SKETCHBOOK
Page One - Bus people, hands, and a frolicking fridge (a staple of the previous night's life drawing session) in anticipation of the next page's drawing
Page Two - The rough version of the shaded drawing above, as well as Blouse accepting his scubbo (all tight and pretty now), my hand, and trying to figure out how Billy Liar can have his hands in his pockets and his knickers down and be staring at the neighbour's.*

For the last... ooh, I dunno, ten years or so, every time I'd travel through the floodplain of the Jordan River (not that Jordan River) and see the houses going up there, my family's car would resound with 'ARGH! Don't build in a floodplain! What are you people, stupid?' Well. I guess so, because basements are being flooded now.** Cue Nelson (not that Nelson): Haa haa!

"We have gone to the city to say 'what can you do to help us?' They said to us 'you shouldn't have built on the river.' We say then, 'why did you give us permits?'"
South Jordan replied, 'Well, we wanted the money and ... y'know ... it seemed like a laugh.' South Jordan then chuckled sheepishly.

*That apostrophe belongs there.
**This article is ... wow. I think whoever wrote it was on the staff of my high school newspaper.

Blouse reminds me rather of Doctor Doppler. ♥

He's written that way! If he wasn't so much like Doppler in the book, I wouldn't make him look like that!

It makes me love him even more. ^^

I love it

I don't remember the car (or van) being able to speak (other than the annoying dinging when you drive with all four doors wide open).

I love the fridge. Your grandma used to sing these lyrics from My Fair Lady:
"All I want is a room somewhere
Far away from the cold night air
With one enormous frigidaire
Oh wouldn't it be loverly"

I swear to God, I thought it was the exact same ting (a refrigerator), and I also thought, "Well, that makes perfect sence."

Also, that is one of the best drawings ever.

No no, it totally is! (Hello, Becky!) Apparently it's spelled "Frigidaire" on the album inset lyrics, whiiiiich I don't have BUT ARIA DOES. So.

Never trust internet lyric sites. They LIE.

Who I trusted was my sister. The internet just backed her up. She is still protesting that it has to be frigid air as 'that's the only thing that makes sense,' but I scoff!

Frigidaire is actually a brand name. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigidaire)

So you were right.

Terribly clever art, too.

Hee hee!

I love it! Billy Liar is one of my favourite songs. I always thought about how that was possible, too. >_> <_<

The day I see a fridge running past me is the day I'll die of too much giggling (and let me tell you, you CAN die of laughter, I read one case in a magazine)
Just wondering, are all the "noodles" here related?

Oh yeah

My parents live in that area--up OFF the floodplain in West Jordan--and we've thought the same thing for all the ten years we've lived there.

Bwahaha! Frigidaire! I love it. It's scampering. If ever there were a frigidaire that scampered, I am sure this is what it would look like. Love it.

And...floodplains? I mean, come on people. Well, I suppose that's not the only stupid place people live and then act all worried when catastrophes happen that they know are going to happen. Earthquakes on the west coast, tornados in the midwest/plains area, lightning storms along the pan handle and "lightning alley", hurricanes in Florida, mudslides, avalanches, rock falls, snowstorms in the mountains. And yet people still live there. But, I suppose we have to live somewhere.

By the way, the look of pure delight on Blouse's face is faboo. He does look a bit like Dr. Doppler, but also like...well, someone else...I just need a little while to figure out who. Yay for drawin's! ^_^

Oh goodness, that fridge had me laughing for a good five minutes.

Hey! I live almost sort-of near the Jordan River....Or Utah Lake. Luckkkkkily there's no flooding up here...yet. And a nice LOL at the Keith Barton ad that came up with that article. Holy marathon, no matter where I go, I can't seem to escape him.

I thought it was Frigidare, and that that made perfect sense. Huh.

Also, darn you Tealin for getting me addicted to a new band when I have no money to buy cds. I've had the stream from that internet open in WMP for 3 days now whenever I want to listen to the songs, and I've gotten the 3 free ones that are on the website that sells their cds. So pretty @_@... must save money from next paycheck...

Actually, unless I'm remembering the lyrics printed in the CD case extremely incorrectly, it is a Frigidaire. Also it makes more sense to me that way.

And also I confess that I always picture more or less exactly what you've drawn, when I hear that song. So. ♥

Hooray for mondegreens!

You probably don't need any more backup or support than you already have on this, but I'll say it anyway: I totally thought it was "Frigidaire" when I listened to it, before I read this post. I guess there's a lot of us who are overwhelmingly clueless (including , it would seem, the Decemberists)! And those floodplain people were asking for it.

Beautiful, beautiful hands (particularly the big one in the uppper right hand corner, LOVED that Blouse drawing even knowing nothing about the character or the context - SO funny!), and...WHAAAAA??? Ok, who the Holy Freakin' Crap is Billy Liar???

I don't know, but he's got a song written for him. Apparently he needs a blt or suspenders or something because he loses his trousers twice in the course of one song, in seemingly unrelated incidents.

Very true! That ruffled mane speaks volumes! It's also really funny that the legionnaire doesn't really look all that surprised to see the giant appliance wiht rubber-hose limbs frolicking by - more like, "Mm. Yes. About time."

This is great! I had to think for a moment and then got the joke. The cartoon was trés adorable, especiallly the camel. BTW, how do you get the grey shading in your picture like that?

I also now know where the running refrigerator in those old prank phone calls about "Is your refrigerator running?"

I just put a layer on top of the sketch in Photoshop and set it to 'multiply' then painted with an ordinary hard brush in shades of grey. Very easy.

I know a girl who looks quite scarily like that drawing of Blouse. I think it's the teeth.

I think their reasoning for the floodplain-building is 'Hey, it's flat! It must be good to build on!' Which again leads me to wondering why idiocy is so fashionable. I mean, really. Why is it cool to be stupid?

Because
