HAPPY BIRTHDAY DADOO!

Yesterday's Sketchbook - illustrations from a dream I had the night before, which, unlike most of my dreams, was actually pretty cool, or at least interesting.

This morning on my way to the bus stop I saw a fascinating thing. It had been raining, and there was a bit of water running in the gutters, but in the gutters were also worms – live worms, not dead drowned ones like you get in puddles after it rains. I think they were alive because their top half was out of the water, it was that shallow, and they could still breathe. The oddest thing was, they were completely unharassed by the horde of robins in the neighbourhood, which I could hear singing all around. I know robins are famously stupid but you'd think they'd have taken advantage of this boon. I have two theories, both equally weak:
1. The 'early birds' had filled up already and weren't interested in what was left in the gutter, leaving those worms to go on their merry way unharmed
2. The worms were about the same size, shape, and colour as the twigs already lying in the gutter, and the motion of the runing water distracted the birds from the motion of the crawling worms. If so: clever worms!

I'm sure everyone will find that as riveting as I did.

Add me to the list of work rescuers! Though not so much as I used to ... I think the worms here have some other way of riding out rainstorms because I very rarely see them on the sidewalk. Those ones in the gutter seemed to be taking care of themselves just fine so I didn't bother disturbing them.
