The 'Long War'

[starts packing to move into cave]

EDIT: Seems like we're getting a decent party together – we can have a campout in my cave, with hot chocolate and s'mores and a merry sing-song! Tra-la! (You guys post the best comments. :)

And then we can all be horribly rotoscoped and hold magical floating milk cartons with one hand on the side!

(I was a cynical animation professional before my time. I never could enjoy that movie.)

Thanks for the funny comment! It is true, of course. I liked the movie for the storyline and dialogue but the animation was not so good. My problem is that I am a sci fi geek and there is so little out there that I go gah gah over anything that is a bit better than the usual space cowboy high tech stuff.

Now you have me wondering how I would look rotoscoped...

HAHAHA -- oops, I mean, oh, how tragic.;) I was so excited about sci-fi fantasy in animation when I was a teen that I convinced myself that "The Black Cauldron" wasn't so bad...for a few years, anyway! (until I saw it again - eek!)

Why is The Black Cauldron so bad? A lot of real talent, it seems to me, went into that film, but it seems so rote and by-the-numbers, somehow, directionless, uncertain of what it wanted to be — almost as if The Company had said, “Well, some of our artists want to do a ‘high fantasy.’ I guess that Tolkein Celtic crap is big right now, but who can take this prophetic pig garbage seriously? Let’s throw in John Byner and some cute comedy fairies.”

I think you pretty much said it all, from what I've read and gathered around here from people who actually worked on it - in a nutshell, that's just what happened. Too bad, not just for Disney and the audience, but because I enjoyed the books they were based on (even if they were kinda "Welsh Tolkein Lite for kids").
