Significant dates have an uncanny appeal, whether they portend the apocalypse or just a big party. When it came to 1 January, 2000, it inspired hopes and fears of both.

Something similar happened on New Year's Eve 999, when a huge crowd gathered in Rome to await the end of the world, until at midnight the Pope blessed them and sent them home. Whether a smaller group of pedants turned up twelve months later is not recorded.

6/6/06 AROUND THE WORLD

Oh BBC, you never cease to amuse. I particularly like the section regarding the breakaway Churches of Satan and, specifically, the Rev. Allee's evening plans. If it wasn't the BBC I'd suspect it was fabricated by Mr Pratchett, right down to the spelling of his wife's name. Ye gods, it's an interesting world, all right.

If he is the Antichrist, he's certainly been squandering his time on Earth ... geez, get your act together, Putin.

Personally, I'm surprised a fundamentalist Christian would assume someone so disapproving of homosexuals to be the devil. If he's right, then gosh, they've got no one on their side.

I’m just surprised he didn’t say it was the Pope.
