It's now a year and a day since the Murderous Dessert Dish Incident. Since then my drawing skills have gone through several cycles of voluntary or involuntary atrophy and struggling to catch back up ... but I think I'm back on track. For now.

Inspired by a short story I heard on BBC7, a different and really intrigiung take on Snow White: Princess Hair-as-black-as-night-Skin-as-white-as-snow-Lips-as-red-as-blood (and her deceased mother) is ... a vampire. And the stepmother Queen does not hate her out of vanity but sends the Hunstman after her to rid the land of the mysterious 'wasting disease' that is plaguing it, and which plagued it when her mother was in power. There was also a certain amount of soul-saving involved as well, in some way or another. Anyway, it was interesting enough to trigger a picture. I was trying to go for a bit more limited style but I'm not sure how successful I was ... I'd no idea what to do with the hands, for example.

Hedgehogs In Overalls (will it ever beat Bananas in Pyjamas?) - Drawn while illustrating to [livejournal.com profile] rawrsie how my shorthand for characters in my Piñata boards evolved from how I'd drawn Redwall characters. For some reason my hedgehogs had always worn overalls, so I tried putting overalls on the hedgehog character in Piñata with humourous results. (I figured it was OK to post a Piñata drawing as the designs have been released in other venues already.)

Not paying attention at Life Drawing. Heheh. The poses get over 5 minutes long and my attention wanders...

That sounds like Neil Gaiman's! Did it involve a necrophiliac prince?

I love that Snow White; her face is so perfect but so, so creepy.

Here as a screaming fangirl, by the by, from lurking on your website. Your Pterry pictures are the coolest things ever. ♥

No... I don't think it was Neil Gaiman. I think the author was female... The title was 'Red as Blood' and the Prince figure had an altogether more Christian symbolism going on.

Thanks for coming out of the shadows!

Would you be referring to Tanith Lee's "Red as Blood"? Just did a quick google on the title and that's the first thing that came up...

Googled "Snow, Glass, Apple" too, and it looks like you can read the short story here: http://www.holycow.com/dreaming/stories/snow.html

There's a really good song based on it too. It's on the filk album "Of Shoes and Ships," and is called, IIRC "Red as Blood."

That snow white story is also 100% an inverse Grail legend, it sounds like.

I was just going to say it sounds just like Gaiman's Snow, Glass, Apples.

Have you read/heard Neil Gaiman's short story, Snow, Glass, Apple? It's got that Snow White as vampire thing, too, and it's a really *viral* take on it - once you've read his story, you can't read the original without thinking about it...

Haven't read it, but it seems everyone else has... This one has had the same effect on me. The continuity announcer warned me before the story started but I did not heed her! And now I am lost! Lost! Alas!

Er, don't read it, I've been scarred for life after it

The little hedgehog reminds me of one of the characters from Once Upon a Forest. Am I the only one who ever watched that as a child?

That sign wins. At everything. And the expression on Brutha's face makes me want to cuddle him.

And now I will have Snow White as a vampire in my head forever, but it makes so much sense!

Hedgehogs are awesome :) I'd've never thought about putting one in overalls, but it's too cute :)

Dude that tortoise sign rocks :D If I could make street signs, I think I'd make one and put it up outside my house, just to freak out the neighbors. Hee, I've never read the Tanith Lee version of Snow White, but your picture's pretty awesome. I love how her eyes are so dark and almost could follow you everywhere. Creepy XD

And Brutha looks like he needs a hug given what he is on, yeah pretty much he'd need one.

Four items, four completely different reasons to like them.
First the sign – just funny.
Snow White – cool design, not like your typical stuff.
Hedgehogs – Silly, clever
Burtha – Feel the terror, you can!

Ha! Tortoises!

And the hedgehogs remind me of... something... I just don't know what... (perhaps it was a picture book, but I really have no idea)

All the artwork is might fine and very clever (as always), particularly your sharply designed little vampiress! I'm sorry that I constantly flaunt my boundless ignorance of your life and interests, to the point where I'm sure to be banned for life from posting here any day now, but what exactly, if I may be so bold, was the "murderous dessert dish incident"?

i like the first hedgehog in overalls. but both are good. hmm.. what other funny animal-in-clothing ideas are there? i heard "the rat in spats" somewhere, thought that was funny :)
