For those who have read the Bartimaeus books (or those who haven't) and who are interested, an episode in a recent series on Radio 4 is about the place of magic in The Arabian Nights, its historical context, and ... stuff. Mr Stroud seems to have done his research because his world is a logical progression from this. Most interesting.
