Although, if you want to be VERY technical, it did sort of end with a bang. Because had the harpoon gun not released the spores, Kit (and everyone else) wouldn't have fallen ill and baby Beatrice would have had a mummy and the kids wouldn't be parents etc., etc., and the series would have ended differently.
I do wonder, however, if perhaps Beatrice might get her own series. He left a LOT of things hanging, and the lovely art at the end suggests more of a story (note the question mark in the water).
Or, perhaps Mr. Snicket is just being sadistic and wants us all to go mad out of wonder. Who the hell knows.
I'm still rather sore about the whole thing. He is releasing more books in May 2007, and although I don't expect them to be filled with all the answers (since that would only start up new questions), I certainly expect more.
I mean, I went "*SPLUTTER* BUH WHA?!?!" at the relationship revelation at the end. (Come on, you can't just throw that at us and expect us to just DEAL WITH IT!)
How'd you like the image of the Incredibly Deadly Viper offering the kids an apple? Personally, I was insanely fond of that allusion. I mean, it's just way too good to be a coincidence, right?
