Caricatures

Sometimes it's beneficial to attempt a caricature from memory, thereby getting a more accurate impression of the character rather than relying on specific details. I was resuming my long-abandoned attempt to caricature Billy Boyd as Pippin for a friend's Christmas present (I'm pretty sure she doesn't read this blog so I think I'm safe in saying that) and noticed he has roughly the same eye shape as Lee Ingleby, so I doodled this little Hollom on the way home from my sister's. A distance of a year or more from the last time I watched Master & Commnader (?!!?!!!?!???) seems to have benefited me in this regard ... unfortunately it did Warley no good. Sigh.

If you want to see my sketches of Pippin from the screen, click here ... amazing how something drawn right off the screen can look absolutely nothing like him. And yes, I tried not looking at reference. It was worse.

Yeah, I know I haven't been posting much art lately. I could say it's because I'm working on Christmas stuff or busy with work but really I'm just a lazy bum. Somebody get the cattle prod.

I love Pippin, yay! And I always love your pages of character doodles. The middle one at the bottom and the one in the top left-hand corner look most like him. But Billy Boyd is exeptionally hard to capture, I think. It seems the nose is the bit that's hard to get right. Teehee. *points to username*

He has very distinctive features, but I think the problem is that they're hard to capture in line form. So much of his nose, lips, and eye sockets are dependent upon the planes that constitute them; once you eliminate the shading he's so much less recognizeable.

You know, I think your Pippin sketches look quite cute. And I'm a major Billy Boyd fan. *laughs* They're not bad.

The lower center one looks JUST like him. It's the mouth I think. I like Billy a lot too, maybe because Boyd's a noodle family name?

Boyd was (I believe) the name of the superintendent of the Jordan School District who was Overpaid and Out of Touch with the Suffering of the Common Student in his air-conditioned office at the top of the totem pole, so I have a rather cooler approach to the name.

Wait, no! He was the high school principal who didn't know how to use commas in everyday speech in a humourous example that implied the choir teacher had had a sex change!

Still.

Yeah, sorry - I kinda dropped off the LJ map while I was trying to catch up on over two months of email in two separate accounts (still working on it!) - I'm sure almost everybody either despises me or has forgotten all about me by now!

I like your Pippins! I think they capture the 'essence' of him without being photographic copies.

You are so good at capturing his lips and nose.

He certainly does! The flippy no upper lip thing.

Oh, Willow. I was just discussing her lips on Saturday when I made my friend watch the first episode. XD

'Z a matter of fact, I could tell it was Billy Boyd without reading.

cattle prod: *fizzle!* (or whatever sound cattle prods make xD)

While they may not all look exactly like him, they're still really great drawings. x)

You can definitely tell it's Billy. He's so loveable!! My fav's are the one on the top left (you really captured him there) and the one where he's looking up, kind of in the middle, on the right.

Great job!

They are good, fearless studies that each have elements of the truth in them (and some are very recognizably him!) that were no doubt helpful springboards to your more impressionistic portrait/caricature here, once you had a chance to internalize and sort out all the pertinent details. Very nicely done!
On the other hand, I'm sorry to inform your readers that you are temporarily full of crap: you may be a lot of things, but I have never known you to be lazy, and certainly not lately! If you're "lazy" for not posting more artwork in your journal, than I'm...dead.
