I watched Prince of Egypt for the first time in years last night, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rawrsie. It's a good movie. There's some stilted dialogue, and I can see now the design problems mentioned by my colleagues which I couldn't see when it came out. But it's Dreamworks' first (and apparently last*) attempt at making a movie with real heart, for which I choose to give all the credit to Brenda Chapman ... who is now at Pixar. Anwyay, I still like it, probably because it was such a formative animation experience for me in high school ... but Moses sure can look like a friggin' alien sometimes.

At the New Year's party I went to, I ended up in a conversation with this fellow ... I'd never had such an opportunity to observe someone so comically, cartoonishly drunk before. I don't know if he'd drunk the entire bottle of wine he was holding (it wouldn't surprise me) but he tried convincing me that Mexicans were warm all the time because they ate spicy food and not, e.g., because they lived in Mexico; that San Diego was not in a desert; that CNN and the BBC are two houses both alike in dignity (though without the Shakespearean allusion); that the people in Iraq don't want to be occupied (really??); and the things written in the drawing. It was when he started putting his arm around my shoulder that it stopped being funny – luckily my friend gallantly stepped in, did some sort of Jedi mind trick to direct the conversation to someone else and we made our escape. Take that, inebriated and ignorant construction worker! That's what you get for making such an impression on someone who draws!

Hello, my name is Tealin, and I am an HTML table abuser. It started when I memorized the table code. Ye gods, it's hard to quit.

And finally: Bulgaria Inaugurates Army of John Cleeses? Go here and click on picture #5. Now that's just silly!

My favourite cat ever has died. He lasted out 2006 ... barely ... what a crummy year.

*This is from their official site: 'At DreamWorks Animation SKG, we strive to tell stories that are fun and comedic, told with a level of sophistication and irreverence that appeals to a broad audience.' Way to pigeonhole yourself, Dreamworks. Congratulations.

I think the problem with PoE was not that it was a serious story-- it was that it was retelling something that had been told, and told a lot better, a bunch of times before. They also ran into a wall of political correctness and they were trying so hard not to offend people that it placed the film into a straightjacket.

There about 5 billion books that could have been adapted into fabulous animated films without the limitations PoE had. But God forbid any animation executive actually go out on a limb with an untried property 9_9

Ahahaa! Your Moses ... I can't stop staring at him. I want to look away, but can't. :I

Aw, sorry about your cat. ): I'm no good at comforting, so the best I can do is say "there, there".

I'm no good at comforting either so I will accept your 'there there' with a similar degree of emotionally awkward INTJ-ness.

Aw man, I'm sorry about your cat :((. But lol at your moses xD. It still vexes me as to how eyes that far apart (well, in the real movie anyway) can still appear to be correct.. or at least work. I have a lovehate relationship w/ far set apart eyes.

Urr, his eyes really REALLY bug me sometimes, especially in upshots ... they look OK when he's being all Egyptian but when he's not, they just look weird. Maybe it's because they're so big. His eyes are about 1 1/2 eyes apart; Miriam's eyes are more like 2 or 3 eyes apart but they're smaller, fit into her face better, and ... just ... work. It doesn't help that Moses' beard makes the bottom of his face look narrower and his hair amplifies the width at the top.

I'm so sorry about your cat. It really was an awful year in so many ways, but that's nearly too much to bear. He was so sweet and affectionate, it had to be seen to be believed. I have loved and mourned for my family pets like they were family, particularly the oldest ones, older than most of my siblings, because they were family.
Your Moses made me laugh. Those designs did get a little too abstract at times! All in all, I thought it was a rather brave, classy film (imagine! An animated film about religion with no animal sidekicks! No merchandise attached!), and I'm sorry no-one seems willing to risk making a "serious", sincere animated feature anymore.
I also got a kick out of your drunk creep and the rare photo of John Cleese in Bulgaria :). But since when has knowing HTML code been a problem? Wish I had that disease!

Part of the problem with the cute-ing up of animated films is that in this part of the world animation is marketed to children only. And [unfortunately, most] children think singing gargoyles are funny. 0_O If the big animation industries (or industry--I mean you, Disney!) realised that there is an animation market with an older demographic, that would open up the possiblility of making a more serious film sans fluffy sidekicks. It's not as if teenagers and twenty-somethings don't watch cartoons. Look at all the money the anime industry brings in. Anyway...

John Cleese in the Bulgarian army. Hm. Have I seen that sketch? :D

ha!

sorry, i just had to laugh at the prince of egypt pic, and i have to agree, their faces are REALLY strange looking.I remember thinking that when it first came out in the cinema(and also in reference to your Miguel and Tullio take on sirius and james i LOVE that film lol and i just thought id let you know i thought that was really funny). Also please keep drawing the cartoons because i love them to pieces and I never really had a clear image as to what Fred and George Weasley looked like until I saw your picture of them and it's almost exactly the way i imagine them!(since the movie was released ive been just thinking of the actors and i've forgotten what i saw any of the characters as before)so please keep drawing.
Noo

Ooh. Actually, I don't pick drawing fights with construction workers. They have access to retaliatory steamrollers.

Hahaha... Moses' drawing is hilarious. I love it!
There are always some people to entertain us in parties. I think that's the main reason I go parties. :D

and thanks for the comment and dropping by my blog.
