Life drawing usually counts for the sketchbook but I don't post it because it's really not that interesting unless you were there and it might also violate LJ's nudity thing. Anyway, it also makes for some good doodling time as I'm all limbered up, so tonight yielded a predictable crop of Holmes.

Inspired by Ubiquitouspitt's retelling of Holmes' 'madness' in The Reigate Squires in which he knocks over a table and blames it on Watson. Waston was running into a naked lady (so like him!) hence the awkward posing.

Trying to incorporate Watson to the scene. Um ... he needs more work. (But he's so much less fun than Freaked Out Sherlock!) We'll just pretend he isn't burning his chin on the lamp, OK?

I've been there ...

My mental picture of Moriarty has him looking like Vetinari if he were played by Christopher Guest's Six-Fingered Man (he has a name, I don't remember it) so I am trying to make something up from scratch going on 'slightly reptilian' and 'a phrenologist's dream.' Unfortunately my Annotated Anthology Vol.1 doesn't go up to The Final Problem so I can't look up the text without trawling Teh Intarwebs which I'm not up for at the moment. Mleh. He also crashed my scanner. [shakes fist] Got it working again, though.

On Moriarty

Those sketches are great - I particularly love Holmes' "He did it!" and "freaked-out" expressions. Watson is so much harder to draw - he's always the one describing but we don't know much about his personal appearance. As for Moriarty... Well, there's always the cartoon image to consider (the one Myasaki worked on, with anthropomorphic dogs. I think in English it's "Sherlock Hound", but I'll check it up on Wikipedia.
The other picture of Moriarty I can't help getting is that of Montgomery Burns, who has a certain reptilian look about him too - not to mention the fact that he constantly looks like he's plotting something (probably because he is, though).

I continue to absolutely love your art, and because I've recently gone on a Discworld diet (C.M.O.T. Dibbler's buns not included though) I regularly come over to your site and see the drawings of the last book I finished. I plan to have most of them done soon - that way I can re-read them. (Of course, the problem is there's only so many English books you can get in big French bookshops. Bummer.)

Bye!
Belphegor :]

Might I also add that Macavity from Cats is almost exactly like Moriarty... :'D

Well, I seem (oddly) to be on the right track... Thanks for the excerpt! I'll try to keep working on him. I was a little disappointed; I thought that as his great nemesis, Moriarty would have more screen (speaker? page?) time but he appears to only have a significant part in the one story, so far.

(Yes, bold – you very boldly state your opinions in no indefinite terms and make no apologies for them if they are unpopular.)

Mad Holmes looks rather traumatized. :D Great fun to see your version of them! Your art is always so delightful.

...LJ has a nudity thing?

Hehe, cute icon.

I know LJ has a porn thing, and if I learned anything from my time in Utah or the Wardrobe Malfunction, it's that most people can't tell the difference between plain old nakedness and explicitly sexual effrontery. I also know that a number of my blog readers are fairly young and their parents might have a problem with copious naked people. So I generally play it safe.

As if I haven't told you a billion times that if I were Watson, I would have slung my hook ages ago and taken up with some sobbing ex-client (fascinated with me due to my involvement in case-solving) and made babies to sell on the black market from here until eternity.

Holmes is so MEAN!

...and yet here I am... (see directly below)

Omigosh! Holmes-ball looks just like my boyfriend 90% of the day!

(Ha. Ha.)

(standard scene follows such as when she tries to give him a kiss when he is taking a nap) Childlike whining noises: "Nuughh! Goway. Nuggh."

I am on my knees begging you to finish this picture and colour it. I've already made it my background.

*makes childlike whining noises*

I will never be tired of Freaked Out Sherlock. That is the most wonderful facial expression and pose I have seen since "Moist imagines he can use stamps as currency."

As for Moriarty, well... I have very clear mental images of what he should look like, and for some reason he bears a resemblance to Merriman... *blink, blink?*

I believe "Count (Tyrone) Rugen" is the name you're looking for.

Love these btw. :)
