This is, more or less, what I was thinking through that whole part of Pirates III...

I tell you, if I ever find myself in the salt flats and nothing surreal happens to me, I will be most disappointed.

"Duck Amuck" is my favorite Looney Tunes short. Nice allusion.

Pratchett plus Looney Tunes plus Pirates... egad!
The great thing about this whole (very surreal) scene is that Johnny Depp plays such a convincing crazy.

Crabs are delicious. Got a problem with delicious crustaceans? Granted, there wasn't any water to boil them in...

The Pratchett Pusher? Oh my... "Wanna buy some Pratchett?"

I was thinking Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, the whole movie... the whole, "Going off the edge of the world, finding a desert" thing, and the frozen seas part, to the point where I initially thought the dead people in the water were sirens.

From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Hehe, yeah ... one of these days I'll put up some screencaps from Sinbad and everyone can see ... maybe after Pirates II comes out on DVD so we can have some side-by-side comparisons.

The dead people in the water reminded me more of the souls in Hades (or ... whatever his realm is called ... name escapes me) from Hercules. Disney cannibalizing its own material is slightly more OK, I guess.

Hmm... after a brief perusal of IMDB, I see that I recognized Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio not from Disney movies of the 90s but from the famously coherent, structured, and plot-rich classics El Dorado and Treasure Planet. Somehow this is not surprising, beyond the fact that I actually enjoyed this last one.

Erm ... edit: '...after Pirates III comes out on DVD.' Obvious, but it'll bug me if I know it's left uncorrected.

Edit again: I enjoyed El Dorado too, but not for the plot. In fact, I enjoyed it despite the plot, and have watched it enough times now that I'm well-practised at ignoring the plot.

...

... Pirates/El Dorado crossover ... hmmm ... Six characters in search of a plot! Someone call what's-his-name! Beckett? HEY! It all falls into place!!

I definitely thought of Sinbad as well, particularly the going off the edge of the world part.

What was wrong with the plot of El Dorado? (You don't have to clutter this up...you can just e-mail me if you want.)

Tartarus was a specific part of the underworld, wasn't it?

From: [identity profile] azvolrien.livejournal.com
I think Erebus sounds better. Tartarus could be mistaken for a sauce by the unwary.

is screw ball origionally from darkwing duck? cause i've only seen it in Impulse comics...

Date: 2008-01-02 07:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
As far as I know, 'screwball' originally comes from baseball, where it is a type of pitch in which the ball looks like it will do one thing but actually does something different (i.e. screwy) which causes the batter to miss it. It also came to refer to a genre of film comedy in the 40s or so. This is from Daffy Duck, not Darkwing, and dates from the 50s, I think.

[has not looked any of this up]

From: [identity profile] lilanglniara.livejournal.com
no i mean the picture of the screw and then the picture of the ball to show screw ball. any idea where that originated? or a guess?

Date: 2008-01-02 05:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] twirlynoodle.livejournal.com
Well, it's a pretty simple rebus of the word 'screwball' so I'd imagine it started pretty early ... if you can find any documentation of it pre-1953 (Duck Amuck) then good on ya.
