More Thud!iness

tealinObviously I've had Thud! on the brain lately ... I've decided that listening to the audio book immediately after finishing the hard copy does not count as reading it again, but is instead maintaining the headspace. Also, you catch things thrown into the beginning that you wouldn't if the end wasn't fresh in your memory. I am not obsessed at all, see how well I rationalize!
Anyway, the reason I've been 'maintaining the headspace' is to get the drawings done that I wanted to, or at least keep trying to hash out uncooperative character designs in order to then have someone to draw into the desired scene. (I'll probably have to listen to the book two or three times before I get to the end of my shortlist, at this rate.)
Vimes shuffles into the drawing room after putting Young Sam to bed and falling asleep himself. It was such a hilariously out-of-character image it had to be done. Also please note the lovely anachronistic fleece blanket. Is there any other possible material for something blue with ducks on it? (I suppose it could be some sort of felt... No! It must be fleece!)
Mr A.E. Pessimal – I'd been fighting with his design all morning on my doodle page (see below) and almost resorted to the magic combo of Cintiq and Sketchbook Pro. This I think of as cheating*, so I decided to give him one more go in my actual sketchbook when I went for lunch, and ... well, made progress at least. Berserk Pessimal will have to wait till another day. There is a character, a live-action one, who I know is how I see him moving, but I can't put my finger on him. Voice, on the other hand, is Richie Webb. I'm fairly certain. (He's the questioning one in this ... the radio version was better)
"Da!"
And the whole world goes soft.
(Reason #2 why Thud! would have to be animated: you couldn't get Young Sam to be appropriately adorable on cue. He'd be doing that excited baby bounce shortly after this – is it possible to train them to do that?.)
I've never gotten a satisfactory Sybil design so I thought I'd try for that again. The tricky part is, I've always pictured her a bit like my former roommate and I've never quite been able to draw her either**. Anyway, here are some tries from last night.
Then I sat down in the screening room today and, in the few minutes before the meeting started, dropped this onto my steno pad:
Looks good enough to be getting on with ...
And, to make best use of the juices when they're flowing best (that is, when I should be working on something else) I have this doodle page on my desk:
*The effect Cintiq/Sketchbook has on my drawing is rather like the effect of a bathroom and shower on one's singing voice. You'll always sound good in the shower, but you aren't really a good singer unless you sound good outside of a small resonant room with running water.
**Unless you count the Carcer who looks coincidentally like he could be a close relation...
Clicking on the above will take you to a 1600x1200 desktop-sized scan of the BEST COVER EVER (handily snatched from the 2006 calendar) should you wish to use it. Resize at will. I scanned it this morning for my own use and thought I may as well share the wealth. Or you could print it as a double-dust-jacket to hide the American cover's shame!

Date: 2007-09-22 08:06 pm (UTC)The fleece blanket picture was spot on with contrasting the hardbitten Vimes in a child's environment. Cute little Sam, too.
I think my favorite is your second Sybil drawing. I don't get to see a lot of images of her, and you captured her strength and kindness there very well.
I know I sure would love to see Discworld as animation rather than live action.
