Going Musical

I think I have discovered the soundtrack for Going Postal.

Unfortunately it belongs to a movie already, and one that is fairly mainstream and stars Johnny Depp so it could never actually be used, but in the theatre of my mind I can watch Moist & Co cavort to the sneaky, playful, European strains of Chocolat.*

If you don't believe me, look up the track called 'Party Preparations' on iTunes or something and tell me that does not sound like Moist.

*Minus the Latin American-sounding bits, of course. They are delightful but they do not taste of cabbage.

The happy thought is, when I do make it into a movie (ha ha ha) I can use it for the scratch track, and then ask the composer to do something kinda like that. I find it hard to believe John Williams wasn't told to do something 'Elfmany' for Harry Potter, for example, and ... hmm, all my other examples escape me at the moment.

Naw, I suspect he gets the commission and then picks his quotes ... his soundtracks are always Zimmer-flavoured; it's snatches of melodic line that he steals from his obscure predecessors.

No, it's generally only a few bars of melody, in the ones I've caught on to. Just enough to be recognizable. That's a 'snatch.'

Larger pieces, and I'm thinking specifically here of the track on the Pirates 3 soundtrack that sounds like Once Upon a Time In The West are similar in flavour but not melody. That particular track was very obviously a gag.

This article (http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/article.asp?ID=695) says everything I have to say on that particular matter, though I might add that the similarity of the Imperial theme(?) in Star Wars to 'Mars' was common knowledge to all the band geeks in high school. If you listen to the whole Planets suite, the influence on John Williams is blindingly obvious in nearly every movement.

:rofl: Oh lord, I hope he wasn't told to do something "Elfmany" or he woulda been pissed (maybe that's why he quit after movie 3?). A lot of composers dislike Danny Elfman because he has no formal training and is all natrual talenty on their arses. X3

He may have been pissed (or possibly pished) but listen to that main HP theme! (I think they call it's 'Hedwig's Theme' on the CDs, beats me why.) You could drop it into an Elfman soundtrack and no one would be the wiser (if it wasn't so identifiable anyway). It's even got Elfman-y instrumentation. Really obviously, too ... you can't do a spooky whimsical bittersweet piece starring the celeste without making it sound like Elfman. That's what he does.

It's called Hedwig's Theme because of the owl... wait, you know that. >_< No, search me why they named the main HP theme after the owl.

But I happen to love all the HP themes that are named after birds (or partial birds): Hedwig's Theme, Fawks' Theme, Buckbeak's theme...

Anyhoo, yeah, I agree. Hedwig's Theme is prolly one of the least Williams piece he's done, especially considering when you listen to his 40 years of John Williams compendium, it all starts to sound alike after a while.
