Here I am, back in my home city... Oddly enough, it actually feels exactly like I've been away for ten days. Not a month, not like it was a dream, just exactly what it is.

It's clear, and cold. This morning there was frost that looked like movie frost, or like that fake-o stuff you spray on Christmas trees. And I swear there is not one more minute of daylight than there was on Dec. 21 (the purportedly shortest day of the year) - the sun rose at exactly the same time (according to the bus, anyway) as it did on the 21st and if anything it set earlier - though I never believed it when they said 4:17 on the radio; it looked like 4:05 to me.

There was an interesting saga across the street today involving a backhoe and a sedan. (I'm sure what you're imagining now is far more interesting than reality.) I'll put pictures up as soon as I get them off my camera.

Tomorrow on The Roundup: Patrick Gallagher! You don't know who he is, of course. But I do! Because I just looked him up! He is Awkward Davies, Able Seaman. (Or rather, he played him at the movies.) He's the sailor who says "Is that the arm you got, or the arm you don't got?" to Blakeney just before the final battle in Master and Commander, to which Blakeney replies "Less of that cheek, Davies." He's the one who helps Blakeney sew Calamy into his hammock. And, if you're geeky enough to have seen the deleted scenes, or unfortunate enough to have had me force them on you, he's the one who gets the chain tattooed around his torso.

He's going to be on the RADIO! When CBC geekhood and M&C geekhood collide...

It's a good thing I heard the promo, too... I usually avoid The Roundup on Wednesdays on account of the "Movable Mosh" - their half-hour feature where they play musical requests from young listeners who have exactly the opposite taste in songs from me. This ends up being a lot of Eminem and Annoying-Female-Pop-Star-of-the-Week. Bleh. NPR would (probably) never have such a feature ... if they have unpleasant music, at least it's hopelessly obscure.

Dangit, my elitism alarm is going off again... hold on a sec...

From elitism to Geeking Out: William Mannering (who played Michael "Faster" Doudle, the character whose name I learned by careful deduction because it's never actually mentioned in connection with his face, as far as I remember) was, according to IMDb, also Yves Hugonin (the elder brother of the pair of siblings) in my very favourite episode of the Cadfael series, "Virgin in the Ice." The wonders of the internet. What a fascinating modern age we live in. My goodness I'm rambly today.
