Instant (?) Gratification
Oct. 5th, 2005 11:51 amIn a rare show of impatience, Tealin today declared her allegiance to the twenty-first century and ordered her copy of Thud!, the newest book in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, from online distributor amazon.ca. When asked about this betrayal of the traditional bookstore, she commented, 'If the largest and most powerful book chain in the country can't get it onto their shelves the day after it's released, then ... yeah.' While the purchasing process took mere moments and involved absolutely no walking at all, she conceded it wasn't as instantaneous a gratification as people would believe. 'I don't expect to get it before Thanksgiving,' she said. 'In fact, I'd be surprised if it got here before Thursday.' She hoped the bookstores would 'get their butts in gear' before then, and if she did happen to find a copy before hers arrived, she would probably go in and 'look at the back cover, and maybe read the jacket flap several times,' but not actually purchase it. Chapters declined to comment on the specifics of this case, merely stating that the book was available for purchase on their website as well. Tealin responded with a derisive laugh, 'Ha ha ha.'
