ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO TODAY

The Depot party, slowed in part by a couple of blizzards but mostly by exhausted ponies, left 2,181 pounds of food and supplies at 79°28.5' S, which they called One Ton Depot. Scott had been hoping to get all the way to 80° S, and even that morning had considered going a further half day's march to get it just that little bit further south, but one of the ponies had been attacked by one of the dog teams a few days previously and he didn't want to risk it. He'd grown convinced on the trip that every last pony was vital for the Pole journey the following summer and that every effort should be taken to get them back alive.

It is a pity we couldn't get to 80°, but as it is we shall have a good leg up for next year and can at least feed the ponies full up to this point. ... I think I shall be all right, but one must be prepared for a pretty good doing.

I have so many drawings planned for this part of the story but none of them have gotten done, and they aren't going to get done this weekend either. Instead I shall commemorate this occasion by going to Disneyland!
