ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO TODAY

Four men were taking two dog teams back from One Ton Depot to base camp: Capt. Scott and Cecil Meares, the dog handler, had one sledge, and Cherry shared Dr. Wilson's. They were making good time, as one does with dogs who run without the tempting distraction of seals and weak ponies, but today they found themselves in a heavily crevassed section of the ice shelf, and that is where the real adventures begin. I'm going to let Cherry tell it because, well, he was there.

The Curious Incident of the Dogs in the Ice Crack )

Incidentally, the lead dog Osman, who had single-handedly (-pawedly?) supported his end of the train from which the other dogs hung, was the dog who had been swept overboard and then back again during the enormous storm the Terra Nova weathered on the way down from New Zealand.

There's a more detailed account in Scott's journal if you're interested ...
