Radio and Rhinovirus
Oct. 30th, 2013 04:24 pmMy new job has me sitting at a desk without a computer, which is very good news for my attention span but means I've fallen far behind on radio. A stubborn head cold the last couple days has kept me home, though, so I've been able to catch the celebration of War of the Worlds' 75th anniversary. If there's anything radio people love, it's a story about the power and societal saturation of radio!
First, the broadcast itself; you have your pick between the canned version on Radio 4 Extra and live tonight at 8pm PDT on KPCC, followed by a documentary 'War of the Welles' – if you miss that, you can catch the same program on CBC's Ideas.
We all know that hordes of people panicked and took to the highways to flee the alien invasion ... but did they? As It Happens says the story was propagated by the jealous newspaper industry. Feel free to buzzkill any relevant conversation.
This might also be reported in Archive on 4's documentary on the broadcast, but I drowsed off towards the end. Did I mention, head cold?
If malevolent Martians roll up tonight, I volunteer to go sneeze on them. I've been practising.
