Heads up to anyone in Southern California who likes a good time with imaginatively arranged cloth:

Check out the Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibit at FIDM* in LA ... VERY COOL. There are actual costumes from several of this year's biggest movies including the ones nominated for Best Costume Design. And, for some reason, Beowulf... which was ... entirely CG? Oh well, someone made some very nice costumes anyway. My deep abiding love for the Sweeney Todd wardrobe has been heightened by closer study and realization of how the clothes are practically character design – I mean, even more than you'd expect. I only wish they'd have listed some of the materials used.

Other movies represented off the top of my head: Atonement, 300, Marie Antoinette, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,** Enchanted, Youth Without Youth, Stardust, Hairspray, Lust Caution, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and 3:10 to Yuma. Also something Indian whose title I forget.

*Fashion Institute ... of ... Danger Mouse?
**Hey Makani, I saw Lucius' Death Eater robes! A-hahahahaa! The HP costumes are also much more awesome in person, especially Tonks'.

I WANT TO GO!!!! Damn, why do I live up here?! ANd why can't they have them in San Fransisco, where the OTHER FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) is at?

You know, that was my second choice of 'college' to go to, it'd cost the same as a year here, but there is only two yrs. Should'a gone. Damn

I want to see the HP costumes! *cries*

Ooh! Sounds nifty! I'll see if my sis wants to go! And if not her, then JJ, who's going into costume design. Any idea when the exhibit is over?

Well, photography wasn't allowed, so they'd have to be evil pictures.

Anyway, these costumes are in millions and millions of pictures, if you count the frames of film, so ... there's that ...

Ah, okay. And I suppose I could have a huge weekend movie marathon, lol. It must have been cool to see all the detail up close and personal, though.

Yes, it was, especially because Sweeney Todd in particular is really under lit. I do wish they'd put his costume in two parts, though; they had all the layers on one mannequin so you got the coat and pants and that's about it, but I really wanted to see the jacket to see what kind of fabric they used because it looks like denim but it doesn't act like it

Heehee. I'm not a seamstress at all (also including Terry Pratchett's version of one xD), but my grandmother has made tons of costumes and stuff before and plans on teaching me. We're making Elizabeth Swann's gold wedding/engagement dress for this project I have at school, though we're taking a lot of the detail out. Once I get somewhat decent I am determined to make Mary Poppins' red dress. And the spats to go with it :).
I wanted to see Sweeney Todd SO. BAD. Sadly none of the theaters in my area played it; once my friend and I finally found one I couldn't make any of the three times they had it running. Thus are the perils of living in Tennessee; luckily there's still Blockbuster.
